Is generative AI killing the stock photo market?
The problem of AI images on stock photo sites 📸
Here's what you need to know:
——
The Washington Post reports Adobe and Shutterstock have allowed the mixing of photo-realistic AI-generated images alongside real photos on their stock image platforms.
The Washington Post highlights AI images depicting scenes of war, along with fake photos that show protest marches. As the report notes, some celebrities have shared such images on social media, oftentimes believing them to be genuine depictions of war or discontent.
Adobe Stock and Shutterstock allow users to upload AI-generated works. By contrast, Getty Images does not allow users to post AI content to its platform.
Why it matters:
With wars in Europe and the Middle East, photos of events on the ground can help to shape a narrative. Adding AI to the mix can provide incentives for people to tell their version of events.

Should stock photography sites mix both AI-created images with real ones?

Is AI Mimicking Consciousness or Truly Becoming Aware?
A trio of consciousness scientists says that, at the moment, no one knows — and they are expressing concern about the lack of inquiry into the question.
In comments to the United Nations, three leaders of the Association for Mathematical Consciousness Science (AMCS) call for more funding to support research on consciousness and AI.
They say that scientific investigations of the boundaries between conscious and unconscious systems are urgently needed, and they cite ethical, legal and safety issues that make it crucial to understand AI consciousness.
For example, if AI develops consciousness, should people be allowed to simply switch it off after use?

France’s AI darling valued at $2B 💰
Mistral AI, a Paris-based OpenAI rival, closed its $415 million funding round.
Here's everything you need to know:
——
French AI startup Mistral AI has raised €385 million (about $415 million) led by Andreessen Horowitz on a valuation of roughly $2.1 billion.
Mistral AI was established in May of this year, and quickly secured approximately $110 million in its first round of funding.
The company has built an open-source LLM, which some suggest could become a notable competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT. However, unlike its US-based peer, Mistral AI is primarily developer focused and does not currently offer a consumer-centric interface.
Why it matters:
While there has been a lot of noise about US AI companies (OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc.), it's clear that other nations are not sleeping on the rapidly-evolving technology. And with a heavyweight investor like Andreessen Horowitz throwing money at European LLM-makers, expect to see more AI startups cropping up around the world.

Will Mistral AI be able to compete with the likes of OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta & others?

Altman talks about OpenAI saga.
Here's what you need to know: 👇
——
OpenAI’s boomerang CEO Sam Altman has made an appearance at Time's "A Year in Time" event, where he touched upon the tumultuous events surrounding his firing and rehiring last month, calling the situation "painful and exhausting."
Altman explained to Time editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs that as OpenAI has gotten “closer and closer to super intelligence,” the team’s stress and anxiety has increased, and that he was ousted when “everything exploded.”
Altman also touched upon OpenAI’s responsibility to develop AI that benefits humanity, while acknowledging there are many risks to artificial general intelligence.
Altman was also dismissive of criticisms by Elon Musk, who has suggested OpenAI is effectively controlled by Microsoft.
Why it matters:
As highlighted by Time naming Altman as CEO of the Year, what he says and thinks about the AI space carries a lot of weight. No if only OpenAI would give us full accounting on why they fired him in the first place, that would be great.
