I’ll never forget the morning after. Two years ago this past weekend, Hurricane Helene didn’t just hit Western North Carolina. It tried to wipe it off the map. Record rain. Mountainsides coming down. Rivers that ate whole towns. Chimney Rock. Swannanoa. Marshall. Little hollers most of the country had never heard of. Damage across a footprint the size of Massachusetts. Homes gone. Roads gone. Water gone. Cell gone. Power gone. People cut off for days. It was apocalyptic. And for too long, it felt like we were abandoned. Minimal national coverage. Help that came late. A whole region in the dark while the rest of the country moved on. But mountain people don’t wait to be rescued. Neighbors became search teams. Churches became warehouses. Strangers drove all night with water, generators, and chainsaws. Volunteers hiked supplies up washed-out trails. Farmers, veterans, first responders, church ladies, teenagers stacking sandbags, they showed up when the cameras didn’t. To every soul who came when it counted. Thank you. Western North Carolina is still rebuilding. The scars are still there. So is the grit. We remember those we lost. We honor the ones still putting their lives back together.
