My hands tightened on the wheel.
Me: "Get out of my car."
Man: "If I do, you take the highway. And you don't want to take the highway."
Me: "The app says it's clear."
Man: "The app is wrong about a lot of things."
I glanced at the dashcam screen. The back seat was empty.
Me: "Why can't the camera see you?"
Man: "It can't. Not yet."
I should have stopped the car. Instead I took Route 9. The road was dark and silent, and no other cars were on it.
After ten minutes, I saw red and blue lights flashing far off to the right, across the valley, where the highway curved.
Me: "What's that?"
Man: "Look closer."
I slowed down and squinted. Through the trees, I could see a crumpled car with its roof caved in, surrounded by emergency crews.
It was the same make and color as mine.
Me: "That's a coincidence."
The man leaned forward from the dark of the back seat.
Man: "Read the plate."
I read it, and my voice cracked.
Me: "That's my license plate."
The new was very jealous of her

Me: "That's a mistake. Fix it."
Receptionist: "Sir, you don't have an account here."
I pushed past her and ran to my desk. My nameplate was gone. In its place was a new one with Eli's name on it, and he was sitting right under it.
My boss walked by and clapped him on the shoulder.
Boss: "Great work on the Henderson report, Daniel."
Daniel is my name.
Eli looked up at me, calm as ever.
Eli: "Can I help you?"
I grabbed his collar.
Me: "Why does everyone call you Daniel?"
Nobody stopped me. Nobody even looked at us. The whole office kept typing as if I didn't exist.
I stumbled into the hallway and called my wife. She picked up on the second ring.
Wife: "Hey, babe."
Me: "It's me. Something is wrong. Where are you?"
Wife: "Home. You just got here ten minutes ago, remember? You're in the shower."
I went cold.
Me: "I'm not home."
There was a pause. Then she said, very softly:
Wife: "Then why can I still hear you?"
The CEO's father couldn't believe that he could save his daughter
The woman next door, a warm, talkative schoolteacher in her early fifties, knocked on my door holding a casserole dish.
Neighbour: "I made too much. Please, take some."
Me: "That's very kind of you."
Neighbour: "Eat it tonight, while it's hot. And whatever you do, don't count the spoons afterwards."
I laughed, thinking it was a joke.
Me: "Count the spoons?"
Neighbour: "Just promise me."
I promised. The casserole was delicious, and I washed the dishes without thinking about it.
The next morning, I opened my cutlery drawer for a teaspoon. There were seven. I knew I had owned six.
I counted again. Still seven.
That evening, I found her at the mailboxes and asked her about it.
Me: "I have an extra spoon."
Her smile dropped.
Neighbour: "You counted."
Me: "You said not to, but I did."
She closed her eyes.
Neighbour: "Then it knows you've noticed."

MY GIRLFRIEND SAID SHE WOULD NEVER LEAVE ME⦠BUT HER LAST MESSAGE DESTROYED ME.
My girlfriend and I had been together for four years.
We had plans to get married, build a home and grow old together.
One evening, she called me crying.
"Baby, promise me something. No matter what happens, don't ever hate me."
I laughed and told her she was being dramatic.
The next morning, she disappeared.
Her phone was switched off. Her apartment was empty. Even her best friend claimed she knew nothing.
I searched for her everywhere.
Three months later, I received a package.
Inside was a wedding ring, an old photograph of us, and a handwritten letter.
It read:
"My love, I'm sorry I couldn't say goodbye. You deserve someone who can give you the future we always dreamed of. Please don't look for me."
I broke down.
But something about the letter bothered me.
The handwriting wasn't hers.
I took it to her younger sister, who immediately started crying.
Then she told me something I wasn't prepared to hear.
"She's been dead for six months."
I couldn't breathe.
Apparently, she had discovered she had a terminal illness and had secretly arranged for everyone to make me believe she had abandoned me.
But there was one final thing her sister had kept from me.
My girlfriend had left a voice recording.
I pressed play.
Her voice came through:
"Baby, if you're hearing this, I'm gone. But there's something I never told you. The day we met, I was actually on my way to end my life. You stopped to help me when nobody else cared. You didn't just become my boyfriend that day..."
She paused.
Then whispered:
"You became the reason I decided to live."
