What is the difference between serialization and authentication?
• Serialization is about traceability. The goal is to track and trace a product by using unique identifier.
• Authentication is about product genuineness. The goal is to make sure that the product has not been counterfeited.
Authentication and serialization are different but authentication ensures that the serialization information can be trusted. Consequently, serialization without authentication is useless. Serialization is very often done with data matrix.

Communicating the solution without getting too technical
When speaking with customers, we try not to focus too much on the technical details. In most cases, customers are primarily interested in three things:
• What does the solution do?
• What are the benefits?
• And what does it cost?
Cryptoglyph, for example, can be explained very simply: it helps brands quickly determine whether a product is genuine or fake using a standard smartphone, without adding additional production costs.
The technology behind it is sophisticated, but the value proposition should be easy to understand.

Are security features useful in preventing counterfeiting?
The short answer is YES, if you are using them.
Who should be using the security features? It is up to you. It may be:
The consumer
• The brand owner has to inform the consumer about the feature’s existence.
• The chosen feature has to be easy to detect, for instance, by using a smartphone.
The brand owner
• The brand owner can organize a detection campaign, for instance, by going into shops with an app on a smartphone
The security features provided by AlpVision can be deployed at both the consumer and the brand owner level, depending on your needs, and are always detectable using a smartphone.

Why is Traceability Important
Government rules and regulations over the world make it necessary for industries like pharmaceuticals and (F&B) to track and trace their products. However, the need for traceability goes beyond a handful of industries. But why is traceability so important that it’s required by law in certain industries? From legal compliance to responsible sourcing, traceability is the backbone of a transparent supply chain.

Tamper Evidence vs. Authentication: What’s the Difference?
Tamper evidence and authentication are not the same. Tamper evidence tells you whether a package may have been opened or altered. Authentication verifies whether the product, packaging, or security feature is genuine. But what happens when a counterfeit product carries a seal that looks untouched?

What are you trying to achieve with AlpVision?
At AlpVision, our goal is simple: to determine whether a product is genuine or fake.
The technology can be applied across many different industries and products, from whisky and luxury shoes to electronics.
The underlying challenge is always the same: giving brands and, when appropriate, consumers a reliable way to verify product authenticity.

Can iPhones and Android phones check whether a product is genuine?
Yes.
Nevertheless, a specific image quality is required, so Android poses the following challenges:
• More device models
• More complex
• More maintenance
Using Apple devices is easier because they
• have only few models,
• generally have a better camera system, and
• require less maintenance.
However, this limitation is eliminated if, instead of running an app on a phone, a video stream is sent directly to a server.

AlpVision - 30 billion products protected every year.
In a recent interview, AlpVision co-founder Dr. Fred Jordan shared a striking perspective on the scale of AlpVision’s anti-counterfeiting technology.
Founded 26 years ago with Dr. Martin Kutter, AlpVision specializes in protecting products against counterfeiting — without requiring stickers or visible security features.
Our invisible authentication technologies enable brands to verify whether products are genuine or counterfeit, including through smartphone-based solutions.
Today:
• More than 1,000 products are protected by AlpVision
• Around 30 billion individual products are protected every year
• Our technologies are deployed across industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to luxury goods.
As Fred put it during the interview: chances are, anyone watching has already handled a product protected by AlpVision.
After more than 25 years, our mission remains the same: making product authentication simple, scalable, and invisible.

Visible vs. Invisible Security Features: Which Is Better for Anti-Counterfeiting?
In anti-counterfeiting and product authentication, security features are generally classified as visible or invisible. Visible, or overt, features can be identified with the naked eye and are often designed for quick inspection. Invisible, or covert, features remain concealed and require a specific tool or method for authentication.

DRUG COUNTERFEITING – WHY IS IT SUCH A BIG PROBLEM?
The consequences of drug counterfeiting are far-reaching and worldwide. According to a review report by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, it’s estimated that the black market for counterfeiting exceeds $250 billion.
Such a huge supply of illicit medications in the supply chain harms the public, causing the deaths of patients in the worst-case scenarios. This problem is persistent as counterfeiters have many avenues to ply their criminal trade online.

What are the best security features?
• Invisible (i.e., covert security features)
• Visible (i.e., overt security features)
Overt security features are:
• Well known
• Hard to remove
• Easy to duplicate
A hologram is a good example of an overt security feature.
Covert security features are:
• Detectable with a smartphone
• Hard to counterfeit

Fake Whisky: How to Spot and Prevent Counterfeiting
Fake whisky doesn’t always come in an obviously counterfeit bottle. In many cases, the counterfeiter keeps the genuine glass, label, embossing, and other familiar details, refilling just the liquid, which gives the counterfeit an immediate advantage.

FPL: Changing the Workflow Without Changing the App
Until now, introducing a new authentication workflow usually meant releasing a new version of AV-Check. That worked well, but it also meant waiting for app store approval and asking users to update their phones.
FPL (Flow Processing Language) removes that dependency.
With FPL, the authentication sequence is defined on the server rather than inside the mobile application. A customer can, for example, start with a QR code, continue with OCR to read a lot number or expiry date, perform Cryptoglyph® authentication, and then decide what happens next based on the result. The same AV-Check application executes the new workflow automatically.
For customers, this means new products and new inspection procedures can often be deployed in minutes instead of waiting for the next iOS or Android release.
FPL also gives our partners much more freedom to tailor authentication workflows for individual brands without creating custom versions of the app. It is a small architectural change, but one that will make the AlpVision ecosystem considerably more flexible in the years ahead.
