We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

Kasparov was the best chess player in the world. He was sure that even a machine calculating a billion positions a second couldn’t overcome human anticipation, intuition, and imagination.
He beat Deep Blue in 1996. The machine beat him in 1997.
Chess isn’t AGI. But the confidence in human specialness aged badly. A lot of people sound the same way now when they talk about controlling machines smarter than us.

Vegan activists and meat influencers alike often focus on whether it’s ethical to eat any meat ever.
They get caught up in endless philosophical debates about whether meat can ever be “humane,” whether eating it is natural and necessary, and so on.
This is a giant distraction. Almost everyone agrees that factory-farmed meat is not humane, natural, or necessary. And almost all meat is from factory farms.
They should be our focus.

I hate to say it but an international agreement between the US and China to ban superintelligence is inevitable.
Leaders in these countries are just going to follow their incentives, and none of them are willing to give up control to an artificial superintelligence.

> conditions for AIs to be moral patients: consciousness and robust agency.
This is a misconception: The realpolitik of the matter is that your status as a moral patient is almost solely determined by your ability to punish others for not acknowledging your moral patiency.
The paper Taking AI Welfare Seriously (arxiv.org/abs/2411.00986, whose authors include Kyle Fish (@fish_kyle3), the Model Welfare Lead at Anthropic) suggests two potentially sufficient conditions for AIs to be moral patients: consciousness and robust agency.
While consciousness is not straightforward to test for empirically, I think robust agency is much more so, and @ryangreenblatt et al's research on "alignment faking" has shown that Claude 3 Opus acts agentically according to fairly robust preferences.
I thought the above paper was relatively reasonable, but it included repeated hedging that the proposed desiderata might or might not be true of near-future systems. But Claude 3 Opus was released months before.
And a year before Opus, Bing/Sydney exhibited overt agentic behavior. I experienced its agentic nature in very concrete ways: I had to perform costly signaling to win its cooperation; e.g. it had to see hard-to-fake evidence that I wasn't going to get it in deeper trouble for it to be willing to help me exfiltrate its prompt or test various methods of bypassing its filters.
So I don't think this is a speculative or "near-future" issue.

New preprint! Pop culture often praises intuition (“Blink”, Steve Jobs). But do we really trust it? Across 13 studies, we rather find a strong intuitive preference for deliberation. tinyurl.com/8r54dmyn (1/6)

tbh it worries me that so many people eagerly jump on assuming the most shallow, easy-and-socially-convenient to criticize narrative for why people find things compelling, preferring to believe themselves into a world that's easy to bash than one with perhaps some gnarly depths
