Punto. Y menos despilfarro, claro, pero…

Gene Roddenberry had a rule that drove the writers of Star Trek The Next Generation absolutely crazy: there can't be any interpersonal conflict amongst the crew. The result was a cultural product I consider almost unique: a story about good people trying to do the right thing that isn't boring. These days, moral ambiguity, twisted anti-heros and an apocalyptic vision of the future practially comes standard in our stories. Dark and complicated is synonymous with "smart," but in fact it's probably ten times harder to write a compelling story about principled, competent and psychologically healthy people. Star Trek TNG dared to imagine a future for humanity where we outgrew our petty squabbles and became our highest selves, where we travel the stars fulfilling our curiosity and genuinely making the universe a better place. Patrick Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard was the indispensable anchor to this vision. Instead of William Shatner's campy swagger as James T. Kirk, Stewart's Picard made "tea, Earl Grey, hot" iconic. His depth and gravitas as a thespian specializing in Shakespeare sold the moral dilemmas that were so often at the heart of the best TNG episodes. The dramatic tension in TNG comes from people sharing the same ethical framework as a group facing difficult problems. The buck stops with the Captain. He listens to and respects his crew, but ultimately it is up to him to "make it so." For TNG to work as a show, Stewart had to take those very internal struggles between a man and his conscience and make it dramatic. He made Captain Picard's very moral seriousness charismatic. He made you believe that...yeah...of course there is a moral arc to the universe and it bends towards justice. Of course it is worth paying the price to stay true to our principles. And of course, the struggle to discern what is right action is actually much more interesting than wallowing in how broken everything and everyone is. Bon Voyage, mon Capitaine

Tony Fadell is known as the “Father of the iPod” He had spent years trying to build up a small digital music startup called Fuse. But by 2001 his company was out of money. By stroke of luck, while on vacation in January 2001, he revived a phone call by no other than Jon Rubinstein! Apple wanted his help building a new mp3 player. He accepted a 6 week consulting roll within Apple and got to work. In that time, he built 3 prototypes which lead up to a big presentation directly to Steve Jobs. He pitched the iPod using styrofoam blocks & fishing weights to simulate its physical weight and feel Jobs immediately rejected the first two larger hard drive or bulky options… Fadell then pulled a hidden 3rd prototype from his coat and handed it to Steve. The 3rd version was a perfect balance of shape and size. Jobs picked up the weighted block, turned it over in his hands to feel its weight and form factor, thought about it for a moment and said: “Let's do this" A month later Tony was officially hired by Apple and named Senior Director of the iPod & Special Projects engineering group. The rest was history.
25 years ago today, we introduced the iPod. 1,000 songs in your pocket. A small team. An unforgiving deadline. We had months to bring the hardware, software, and music experience together. Proud of what we built and that it means so much to people still today. A device that has been woven in many ways into our lives. People have filled their iPods with road trips, breakups, workouts, special occasions with family and friends. How cool that the iPod has become part of culture and our stories. 25 years, it’s hard to believe! Celebrating the team that made it happen today 👏 @StevenLevy was there from the start @WIRED wired.com/story/im-still-con…
