Yesterday I deleted a post It said: ‘’I don’t understand why artists with literally no fanbase release albums’’ Some of the reactions were strong, so I decided I wanted to take time to write a longer post. Here goes... Some People said: ‘’It’s called ART’’ ‘’This is one of the most elitist posts I have read’’ ‘’Only a non-musician would say this’’ Others said: ‘’Yup, I made this mistake’’ ‘’One of the most ‘on point’’ posts you have written Clearly we are divided on this subject, but here’s my take in more detail: Let me start by saying this - if you want to make an album for 'arts sake' and you are not trying to build an audience, that’s cool, go do it. But first, genuinely ask yourself if you are happy with this album not being heard by the most amount of people possible? The way I see it, releasing music is a chance for you to make a big fuss. It’s a time to celebrate yourself, your music and the audience you are building. Every time you make this fuss (if you do it well) you attract new people into your world. Do you want to make a fuss once and release an album? Or do you want to make 12 big fusses and release individual songs, picking up new fans every time you make that fuss? Then, you get to make one GIANT FUSS and release the full album to a group of excited fans who have slowly become invested in you and your music over time? Instead of being asked to listen to 40 minutes of music before they even know who you are. This is a big ask. Attention spans are low, competition is high and if you genuinely want an audience you have to think about their needs as well as your own. If this makes you mad at ‘’the state of the industry’’ (or humans in general) ask yourself this? When was the last time you sat through 30 minutes of music from an artist you had never heard of?
