Politicians and taxes didn’t ruin the country. Politicians are outcomes; taxation is a symptom. The real disease is belief in the legitimacy and necessity of coercive rule—the superstition that some possess a moral right to rule others by force. Belief in authority did this.
It is always individuals who exercise coercion, seize property, restrict liberty, or threaten force. No law, office, uniform, order, or majority vote absolves one of personal responsibility. Aggression does not become legitimate because authority commands it.
