CapuchinAI is an AI-enabled touchscreen system that allows scientists to better understand the cognition of wild capuchin monkeys in their natural habitat in the forest of Costa Rica. "Getting a model to tell individual capuchins apart by face, in a forest, at thirty frames a second on a battery-powered computer, is the piece that makes everything else possible," said @Thejakeyboy, professor in the @gatech_scs. The system identifies approaching monkeys, presents touchscreen tasks, and automatically delivers rewards, all without capturing, restraining, or forcing the animals to do any tasks. During a two-week field trial, 16 wild capuchins voluntarily interacted with the device, and 8 rapidly learned and retained the touchscreen-reward association, showing that meaningful cognitive data can be collected without the social disruption and welfare costs associated with captivity and experimentation. "[B]y collecting cognitive data in wild settings, we can begin to investigate the developmental sources and social, behavioral, and ecological correlates of cognitive performance across timescales in environments in which individuals are naturally exposed to variation in experience." 👥 Federico Sánchez Vargas, Sai Rakshith Potluri, @Thejakeyboy, and @mebenitez85 🏛️ @gatech_scs, @GeorgiaTech, @gtcomputing, @AnthroEmory, and @ExtraHop 📰 Read @nytimes's article by @EmilyAnthes: nytimes.com/2026/07/28/scien… 📖 See the full study here in the @AmJournalPrimat: doi.org/10.1002/ajp.70194 #AnimalEthics #AnimalWelfare #CognitiveScience #WildlifeResearch #Primatology #AI #BehavioralScience
