Governor @SakajaJohnson welcomed eight city leaders from across the continent who are part of the AMALI (African Mayoral Leadership Initiative) programme. The leaders are part of the AMALI programme that brings together city leaders and provides them with exclusive, tailored support to hone their visions for their cities for a year, 2024. The Sakaja’s project is the rehabilitation of Nairobi River. They also visited; Viwandani, behind Karatasi Enterprise, to see the works by the community to reclaim and rehabilitate the riparian land and Michuki Park. Other Kenyan Governors in this year’s cohort include H.E. Anyang’ Nyong’o of Kisumu and H.E. Joseph Ole Lenku of Kajiado.

My time in Nairobi at the #African Mayors Leadership Initiative (AMALI) meeting continues to be highly productive. Yesterday I met former #Namibian First Lady and fellow lawyer Monica Geingos to discuss challenges facing Mayors across the continent in rejuvenating their cities. This morning I met the President of #Kenya, His Excellency Dr William Ruto, with other African Mayors at State House. The focus of our discussion was how we can plan to meet the challenge of rapid urbanization across #Africa in the next 20 years. President Ruto visited @CityofBulawayo in April as guest of honour at ZITF. He told me how much he enjoyed his visit and I encouraged him to visit again soon. Yesterday in my meeting with Governor Sakeja (Mayor of #Nairobi) I discussed how we can encourage better connectivity between our cities, including the need to have a direct air link.

As a fast urbanising nation, Kenya is making significant strides by investing in housing, climate resilience and infrastructure to support this transformation. We must therefore find ways of dealing with the urgent challenges and immense opportunities in African urbanisation. Engaged a delegation of current and former governors and mayors of Africa and philanthropists under the umbrella of the African Mayoral Leadership, at State House Nairobi, led by Jamie Cooper and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. Commended the group for impactful leadership and efforts to build safe, smart and green cities for Africa's future.

The African Urban Forum has continued in Addis Ababa, focusing on different critical issues that cities face in Africa. One of the sessions centered on “𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.” Held at the Addis Ababa City Mayor's Office, our discussion highlighted that if cities are managed properly, there are immense opportunities for realizing sustainable development. In our discussions, we, the mayors, underscored that breaking the cycle of urban poverty, revitalizing impoverished areas, expanding services and infrastructure, and addressing housing shortages in a timely manner are our top priorities. We also noted that addressing leadership challenges is among the key concerns as mayors tackle these critical urban issues. My God bless Ethiopia and its People! #AfricanUrbanForum, #AddisAbaba, #MayorsForChange, #MayorsLegacyGoals, #SustainableCities

I am pleased to have just completed the one year African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) programme and to have been able to attend the final in-person convening in Nairobi this week. A partnership between #BigWinPhilanthropy, @BloombergDotOrg and the #AfricanCentreforCities (ACC) this unique leadership programme supports African city leaders with an exclusive, tailored initiative designed to hone and deliver their visions for their cities. My participation in the AMALI programme (amalicities.africa) contributed significantly to the conceptualization and design of the #TransformFreetown - #TransformingLives target of creating 120,000 decent jobs for women and youth by 2028. AMALI is supporting FCC with capacity building, data management expertise and technical personnel input as we proceed with the implementation of our ambitious but achievable job creation target. #TransformFreetown #TransformingLives #AMALICityLeadership

I am at my Alma Mater @UCT_news @uct attending the #AMALI - African Mayors Leadership Initiative - with fellow Mayors from across Africa, including the Mayors of Nairobi, Freetown, Dakar, Windhoek and Blantyre. We are focused on defining our legacy goals for our terms of office. Mine is to create secure water supplies, sanitation and cleansing systems to guarantee the future needs of the City of Bulawayo. There are a wide variety of experts helping us. I am working in a smaller group with Yvonne Ali-Sawyer the Mayor of Freetown, Luisa Dias Dongo, the former Prime Minister of Mozambique and Jim Anderson, from Bloomberg Philanthropic.

This morning, we gave a warmest welcome to the Mayors of African cities, leaders of international organizations and philanthropies, who came to participate in African Mayoral Leadership Initiative #AMALI reunion: an initiative for promoting mutual learning and devising African solutions for African problems. We shared our success stories. Making Addis the best city to raise children and visited our showcases. They will also visit our city more. Happy to have fellow African mayors in their second home. AMALI is a plus to our #PanAfricanism commitment.
