🚨 Andrea Smith-Taylor went on a Christmas Eve shopping spree in 2024 for her kids, but police arrested her that night, sending her home empty handed. Two years later, gifts like a PlayStation and clothes have never been returned.
“We have not been able to find them, so she was forced to tell her children that those gifts were just gone,” said her attorney, Anca Grigore, director of the Brooklyn Defender Services’ seizure and surveillance defense project.
Smith-Taylor is one of six plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit filed against the city this week. They all claiming their property was improperly seized, retained, sold, destroyed or otherwise never returned.
The Brooklyn Defenders, which filed the lawsuit Wednesday, said hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have their property seized by the NYPD each year in connection with an arrest or as a witness or victim of an alleged crime.
When people try to get their belongs—like cash, electronics and jewelry—returned, they face a "labyrinthian system of contradictory instructions, arbitrary requirements, and dead ends across precincts, property clerk offices, and auto pounds,” the Brooklyn Defenders said.
“New Yorkers are losing their property to the tune of tens of millions of dollars every single year to the NYPD,” said Grigore.
She said bodycam footage showed officers assuring Smith-Taylor they'd get those gifts to her kids, but they never made it.
“They're completely lost to the system,” Grigore said, adding the City's current process “functions more to deprive New Yorkers of their property than to ensure that New Yorkers get their property back.”
An NYPD spokesperson said the department would review the lawsuit and that the incidents described in it were also under review.

🍸 A new report breaks down how much drinks cost in New York City, and not surprisingly there's some serious contrast between the city and the boroughs.
If you're looking for a bargain, "Manhattan is not the place to be," according to Sam Zukin, the founder of 5PM NYC, which features a popular drink pricing guide using data from bars citywide.
"Bayside in Queens, Carroll Gardens, Throgs Neck, Woodside—those are some of the places where you're going to be seeing a cocktail for under $13," he said.
Meanwhile, the 10 most expensive cocktails are all in Manhattan, he said. NoMad, where cocktails come in just under $20, is the priciest, followed by neighborhoods like Tribeca, Kips Bay, SoHo, Nolita and Midtown.
Even little things can rack up a bill. For example, if a cocktail involves words like "golden" or "silver,” “they’re not just words, they cost you money when you're actually paying," he said.
Zukin said Happy Hour is the greatest hack, with drinks down by 30% to 40%.
