Today my son turned 12. I asked Amarillo PD if they could help make his birthday feel like something, because this year I could not. They showed up after school with a bike, a bundt cake, and three challenge coins. They stayed, joked with him, answered questions, pulled in the neighbor kids, and handed out stickers. The other kids started talking about becoming cops and joining the military. They stayed until the rain started. He wants to be a cop so he can “help people and stop the stupid.” He’s a good kid. Straight A’s and B’s. Plays more than one instrument. Never been in trouble except standing up for someone smaller. When I had to tell him this was it for gifts this year, he jumped off the couch, hugged me, and said he doesn’t care because he loves me more than anything. We are not special. We are just doing the best we can. Those officers made a boy feel seen, and they showed a whole handful of kids that cops are good people doing a hard, necessary job. We didn’t have a party. No friends could come on a school night. They still treated him like he mattered. That is the kind of policing that builds the next generation instead of just responding to the last one. If you know an officer who was there today, tell them a mom in Amarillo is still wiping her eyes. He thanked me for dinner tonight like he always does, because he knows what hunger is. Today he also got to feel proud. Thank you, @AmarilloPD. You did more than celebrate a birthday. You gave him a memory he will carry into the kind of man he wants to become.
