Some mainstream schools in England have specialist units or resource bases that provide extra support to children with special educational needs (SEN). When these specialist SEN units and resource bases work well, they enable inclusion. However, the success of these units is dependent on how well they are resourced and staffed, and how they interact with the wider mainstream school. Over the summer, we held a series of focus group with parent carers of children who either currently attend a unit or base or have done in the past. We also spoke to parents who have considered this type of placement for their child. Your experiences have already been shared with Department for Education. Thank you to everyone who took part in the focus groups. And thank you too to the parent carers who joined us at meeting with government officials. Read more here 👇f.mtr.cool/ggmobqvmij

Last week, the FA and Barclays released the findings of the annual Equal Access to Football in Schools survey – and the results show encouraging progress. This year, 90% of schools offering Key Stage 2 and/or Key Stage 3 provision are now delivering equal access to football within the curriculum, up from 88% in 2024. This is a moment to celebrate as since 2020, the number of girls attending schools with equal access has risen significantly to 2.6 million (an increase of 31% since 2020/21) showing real momentum towards long-term, societal change. Visited a great special school today, and it was a valuable use of my time. One thing that struck me, however, was that there are about 20 children in our school who would not be out of place in that setting. Many of our children are, in fact, in greater need.
