#OnThisDay October 24, 1939 - Two Postal Inspectors investigating missing mail discover an unusual suspect - a cow.
In the fall of 1939, Postal Inspectors were contacted about three valuable pieces of mail - two life insurance policies and a death note - that disappeared from a mailbox in Lincoln, NE.
The investigation seemed to be at a dead end, until a neighbor came forward with a surprising explanation. A loose cow had wandered over to the mailbox and began eating its contents. The neighbor said they tried to scare it off, but the mail had already been destroyed.
In another unusual case of "mail theft," a crated hog stole a mail pouch from the back of a mail truck and pulled it into his crate. The badly damaged pouch was later recovered in a nearby city.
No charges were filed in either case.
