Years ago I spoke to a retired officer who knew him as a peer. He was on active duty and well respected when Run Silent was published and made into a movie. That fame cost him admirals stars from a (jealous) silent service who considered that a distraction.

Hubble captured the heart of the Trifid Nebula in this beautiful #HubbleClassic view. This is a star-forming region within our own Milky Way Galaxy, at a distance of about 9,000 light-years. A group of recently formed stars is visible near the center: go.nasa.gov/3GKtYmy
Ridges of dark brown dust cross the image, in front of glowing pinkish-red gas. A few very bright and large stars shine near the center, and smaller stars dot the image.

I read so very many of his novels as a teen back in the 60s. In the last few years, Iโ€™ve revisited several, and gotten so much more from them. He really was a most talented writer.

A seagoing tug would retrieve the orphaned 100-foot bow section, which the tug crew nicknamed the USS McKeesport after a neighboring city. โ€œSighted the suburb of Pittsburgh and have taken it in tow,โ€ the tug crew reported.
