After 22 essays published on Substack, I particularly enjoyed writing this one. It gave me a chance to reconnect with friends and former colleagues who lived the story with me. We had a good laugh. Too young to know my place. Not sure I know it any better today. substack.andreleger.com/p/th…

AI is getting very good at solving math problems. That does not make mathematicians obsolete. Solving a problem and deciding which problem is worth ten years of your life are two different skills. I hunt with a pointing dog. The dog finds the bird. I take the shot. A better gun does not make the dog less important. That is how I have come to think about AI and mathematics.

. @Adobe, what kind of business are you running with shenanigans like this? I paid until Aug 10. Your cancel screen tells me I have 26 days left, then takes then takes them away. You wrote the reminder and the theft into the same dialog box.

Mon dernier essai.

Modern investing increasingly resembles consumption. Part value. Part experience. Part dopamine. – at Saint Andrews, New Brunswick

Giving an enterprise valuation on SpaceX from a small-float IPO is like extrapolating beer prices at an NHL game. The price you pay is real. The price beer is worth is something else entirely. – at Saint Andrews, New Brunswick

The essay I just published opens with Rory Sutherland. That opening did not exist 36 hours ago. I added it because I had no audience in mind, and the essay was too technical. Then I asked myself who I would actually want to share it with. I’ve read @rorysutherland’s Alchemy many times. Simply imagining him as a reader changed how the essay opened. The frame came first. The opening came after. Funny thing: the essay is about exactly this mechanism.

I want someone to fund my idea of a Davos-style event where every speaker has recently retired. You would then immediately hear the unvarnished truth about absolutely everything.

Priessnitz at Gräfenberg, 1822, ran the full template. Cold water, sun exposure, fresh air, walks, plain food, rest. Rollier later specialized the heliotherapy piece for TB. Same template, eighty years earlier. Wrote an essay tracing the arc from Gräfenberg to Battle Creek to the wellness industry of today. open.substack.com/pub/expect…… – at Edmundston, New Brunswick

The wellness industry is now worth almost seven trillion dollars. Larger than sports and pharma combined. The best intentions have a strange habit of becoming a business plan.

Is my Bachelor of Commerce degree now useless? I asked myself that question in my latest essay. Back in my undergrad years in the early 1990s, financial theories described a world we don't actually live in. Black-Scholes, CAPM, portfolio allocation.

Lately, professors have been panicking about AI and students cheating. The cheating panic is the wrong panic. AI didn't break credentials. It exposed what credentials were already measuring.
