Andy Burnham PM Alert Perhaps this is boring. But much discussion of Andy Burnham becoming PM ignores it. To be PM you need to be an MP able to command a majority in the House of Commons. Andy Burnham is the only MP able to. How long that will last, we don’t know. The end.

There’s film of Farage posing outside a polling station in Gorton (I believe) and standing behind him is a Protec officer with an automatic weapon covered by his jacket. He’s clearly a cop bc ordinary security personnel aren’t allowed to carry guns.
🚨 This is getting ridiculous. Farage has used his security needs to help justify the £5m “gift”. He turned down state-funded security. Now, following Ann Widdecombe’s murder, Reform has moved the entire conversation to Farage’s safety — and The Times leader column says the state should fund an official protection team. So what exactly was the £5m for? Ann has almost disappeared from her own murder story. Thread 1/2

Spot on from @AnthonyGlees. We don’t know. But we do know enough of what’s already happened - recent cases: Russian & Iranian states violently attacking the UK PM (arson) & the UK Jewish community (arson & more), respectively - for this to be considered a serious possibility.
Some of us said from the start that it was daft to exclude an act of political violence & to ignore MI5’s warning that Russia & Iran were busy fomenting sabotage, inspiring assassins & causing mayhem in the UK.

There’s not a little truth in @USWPColby’s analysis (see attached ⬇️). Yet the fact he feels a need to say it, highlights the radically, rapidly deteriorating relationship between the US & the very middle powers - crucial US allies - he refers to. The opposite of reassuring.
There is a great deal of hubbub about a collective “middle powers”strategy these days. At DoW, we are not concerned that this is a serious possibility. Rather, we are more concerned that a few allies and partners will *think it is* and waste valuable time, money, and political capital on a distraction. 1/

Bridge, if you feel that you need to point all this out publicly, this suggests that you are corrrectly beginning to understand that many of your allies have lost trust in US reliability. What would remain of the US as a superpower without the global web of Partners and Allies?

Ann Widdecombe Terrorism is criminal. Reasonably suspecting someone of such criminality is grounds for arrest & holding for 14 days (extendable). Terrorism crimes involve political motivation. What does that tell us about the killing of Ann Widdecombe? Very little. A 🧵 /1.

There are multiple hypothetical scenarios in which such a killing could be a terrorist/political act. Or not be one. Increasingly fevered, some might say sometimes manipulative, speculation about the killing based on misunderstood or twisted facts, is highly regrettable./18. End

Correction to post 13: “reasonable grounds to suspect” should read “grounds to charge, meaning both sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction and a determination that the prosecution is in the public interest”.
