New pre-print from the group 🥳 We use targeted genome mining to show that the plant pathogen Rhodococcus fascians makes the antibiotic lydiamycin. The BGC information then informed the discovery of multiple key features relating to the molecule 1/4

Check out what I was up as I was nearing the end of my postdoc!
Big congrats and thanks to the cryo-em king @casub1 for all the incredible work together and to @SusanSchlimpert for letting me work on this project early on until the end of my time there!!!

It was a pleasure @michael_brigham 😀 Well done on a great thesis.
Thrilled to have passed my PhD viva yesterday! Many thanks to @AndyTruman4 and @wbturnbull for a great discussion, and of course thanks to collaborators, lab members and my supervisors @ryanfseipke, Glyn and Mike for their support over the years
While the BGC is on the R. fascians pathogenicity plasmid, we could not detect a direct role in pathogenicity for the molecule. Instead, it contributes to microbial competition during plant colonisation. 3/4
Come join us at JIC!
VACANCY - We’re seeking a visionary Group Leader for plant-arthropod interactions research, including insects, with expertise in genetic processes, biochemical pathways, or evolutionary and population genomics.

Was fun to introduce a new student to this classic of a paper from Merv Bibb and colleagues at JIC published 40 years ago (!!). Such an elegant observation and still useful at "seeing" genes that have been misannotated or missed entirely.

For goodness sake. Despite big tax rises overall chancellor has done it again. Fuel duty frozen and "temporary" 5p cut kept. This government is supposed to care about climate change. And I'm willing to bet fiscal numbers assume increases into the future. How much longer?

If your degree is 'not good value for money', then don't do it. But in science, after 12 years of frozen fees, we simply can't afford to deliver our current high-contact high skill degree courses. But government, not fees, should be paying more for key degrees.

Today @SciTechgovuk published the UK Position Paper on the 10th EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme.
Read it here: gov.uk/government/publicatio…

ALT A graphic that includes the following quote from Professor Christopher Smith, UKRI International Champion: “This position paper signals the continuing importance of our collaboration with European partners, fostering innovation and advancing research that will benefit us all. At UKRI, we believe that working together across borders is vital for tackling global challenges and driving sustainable growth."
We are setting out the UK's initial position on FP10: the successor to Horizon Europe
Research is critical to boosting health, growing the economy & reaching net zero. It's in all our interests that the structures supporting our innovators are the best they can be

#ICYMI We hope everyone who attended our Applied Molecular Microbiology Summer School at @IUCDubrovnik @institutrb had an amazing time.
Judging from your posts and photos, you certainly did! Roll on the next one in 2026! 🦠🔬
Delighted that a collaboration with @Nairlab_UIUC is now online @nchembio Nucleobases are common in biology but not in peptides. In this work, a nucleobase-peptide hybrid is generated from a ribosomal precursor peptide via YcaO domain protein catalysis. nature.com/articles/s41589-0…

Great to have our Director introduce our first @JohnInnesCentre Diversity lecture (sponsorship by JIF) given by Helen Musgrove from @LexxicLtd. Along with our @BBSRC connecting culture project planning to see some real changes to celebrate and value neurodiversity.
Excellent first half of our @JohnInnesCentre @institutrb Summer School in beautiful Croatia (although currently having heavy thunderstorms ⛈ ) at the @IUCDubrovnik
Very happy that our work on understanding tropolone biosynthesis is now out in @mbiojournal Great work from the PhD of @AlasterMoffat and some excellent biochemistry from @TeufelLab #biosynthesis #Pseudomonas
