Federal grantmaking processes are meant to be fair and free of political favoritism or retaliation – but a new Trump Admin rule would allow corruption & politicization of grant award decisions, creating an outsized risk of abuse & coercion.
Federal grants are intended to be awarded through an open, fair, and merit-based process. A new Trump Administration proposal would instead allow grant decisions to be based on political preferences and presidential priorities. cbpp.org/research/federal-bu…

It is unconscionable to leave ICE and CBP’s violence unchecked and allow them to continue their reign of terror. Our government should hold them accountable.
Yesterday, Senate Republicans kicked off a partisan process intended to fund ICE & CBP without any crucial reforms or guardrails to end the campaign of lawlessness and violence that the Administration, ICE, and CBP have inflicted across our nation. pbs.org/newshour/amp/politic…

State and local policymakers can take action to mitigate the impact of these harmful federal policies and make investments in the housing and supportive services that work for people in their communities. For starters, they can:
My new paper details how the Trump Admin is pushing policies that 1) take assistance away while making housing *less*affordable and 2) punish people who become homeless because they can’t afford rent. cbpp.org/research/housing/tr…

Senators have the responsibility to uphold and defend the Constitution. Using the annual budget process when necessary to protect the constitutional rights and safety of all people and communities should be a requirement of the job.

In the wake of another horrific shooting death in MN by federal immigration officers -on top of wrongful detentions, violence, & fear there & across the country- it is appropriate for the Senate to use the budget process to push for critical protections for people & communities.

Undertaking a sweeping investigation of almost all federal funding to 14 states & D.C. – all but one led by a Democrat – is a harmful & shameful escalation of the Admin’s corrupt politicization of basic governance & suggests funding freezes may be coming. cnn.com/2026/01/22/politics/…

New blog with state-by-state data: Proposed cuts could leave more than 600k people struggling to pay the rent. But Congress can keep people in their homes with an FY26 spending bill that provides sufficient & timely funding for critical HUD programs. cbpp.org/blog/congress-must-…

Everyone deserves an affordable home, including our neighbors, friends, & coworkers who are immigrants. But a Trump Admin plan would take assistance away from certain immigrant families and create additional barriers to rental assistance for everyone. propublica.org/article/trump…

The Trump Administration’s threat to illegally fire more workers if the President doesn’t get his way is blatant extortion: using working people and their families as pawns in a power play with no concern for who gets hurt.

Important article by @jessica_m_wash with @theintercept explaining yet another Trump policy designed to hurt, rather than help people with low incomes.

This week, Trump ordered the fed takeover of local police & mobilized the nat'l guard and ICE in DC, w/ threats of action toward many including unhoused ppl. This is an abuse of power and an escalation of cruel anti-homeless policies across the country: cbpp.org/research/housing/st…

We know that these are unprecedented times and that people may in fact get arrested in DC because they are homeless, regardless of the law. We ask you to look out for your neighbors. Please share some basic tips on interacting with the police:

This bill takes health coverage & food asst away from families so that the country 'can afford' tax cuts to the wealthy. Oh but wait! This bill also adds trillions to the debt. No logic, just cruelty.
Outrageous and it should be rejected by the House.

Since SCOTUS allowed cities to arrest and ticket people for experiencing homelessness a year ago, 250+ anti-homeless bills have been introduced across the US.

You can’t cut hundreds of billions from #Medicaid without harming people. New CBO analysis confirms cuts floated by House Republican would leave millions uninsured, each slashing billions from Medicaid w/$170b-$472B in cuts coming from lower enrollment.
