The only antibody therapy known to neutralize SARS-CoV-2 variants XBB.1 BQ.1.1 in vitro + available under FDA EUA for immunocompromised COVID is convalescent plasma from vaccinated/boosted donors.
Grateful to @giveblood for making CCP available!

We are so excited to gain such an incredible new class of incoming fellows today! Congratulations to each of you on all you have already accomplished. We cannot wait for you to join our Stanford ID family in a few short months!
Allergies are weird!! Thanks, @KatherineJWu, for “shedding” some light on cat allergies. The human body is a strange place. The more we learn, the stranger it gets. Glad your B cells and mast cells have made their peace with Calvin and Hobbes.
“Allergy…is a hot, complicated mess—a common fixture of modern living that many of us take for granted, but that remains, in so many cases, a mystery.” @KatherineJWu #AIMedEd @rubin_allergy @AnneLiuMD @nowak_wegrzyn theatlantic.com/science/arch…

Intradermal delivery of vaccines? Calling all allergy nurses!!
Replying to @kavitapmd
The DOWNSIDE of going from single to multi dose vials is wastage/also many of us in primary care still do PPD skin test (to test for TB) which is intradermal,but not all health workers are trained to do this.Nevertheless its an incredible boost for a dwindling supply of vax -fin
Novel COVID variants are likely arising from immunocompromised people.
~2-3% of the population is immunocompromised.
~100% of the population is impacted by novel variants.
We need to invest in preventing infection in immunocompromised people — globally.
It enrages me to hear immunocompromised patients say that their doctors told them they shouldn’t get vaccinated against covid because being immunocompromised means they won’t benefit from vaccination
Hearing many misconceptions about Evusheld. Here are some facts:
You don’t need to check COVID antibodies before getting Evusheld.
You can benefit from Evusheld even if your immune system is too weak to benefit from COVID vaccination.
People are surprised to learn these conditions make them eligible for paxlovid:
* High blood pressure (half of U.S. adults)
* Body mass index >25 (over 70% of U.S. adults!)
* Physical inactivity / sedentary lifestyle
* Asthma (moderate+)
* Former smoker
* Depression
Sadly it is June 2022 and COVID meds are still being underused or used incorrectly. To clarify:
Eligibility for paxlovid is determined by risk factors, NOT by severity of disease.
Evusheld used to prevent COVID-19 in immunocompromised (many) or vax-allergic people (few).
