Books read in 2023: a running thread
A few exceptions aside, the "theme" is books by women authors
(The old one got bunged up, so I'm re-doing it.)
I have three Bluesky invite codes I would like to pass on to interested people. If you're seeing this, you're welcome to them, but I'd esp. like for people/orgs who are from or are interested in Latin America to have them. DM me if you'd like them or can pass them on.
I have two invite codes to the other place that I'd like to pass on to journalists, academics, writers on culture, etc. who live in/write about Latin America. DM me if you're interested.
Sitting here wondering how Mitchell might rephrase that final sentence if he were to take generative AI technologies into account.

few things feel as sickening as acting, even in front of yourself, like you’ve retrieved a normality that has died. because it’s like making a marionette out of normality’s corpse and saying oh look it’s dancing everything’s super

A compass plant, an edible plant native to prairies, growing out of a curb just around the corner from our house. I first noticed it a couple of days ago, and this morning I took a picture of it; this afternoon, I'll give its resin a try--the Plains tribes chewed it like gum.
(As I think of all the other things plaguing higher ed these days, bedbugs actually would be easier to get rid of.)
Hace unos días fueron suspendidas las clases en facultades de la UNAM y en la UACM por una plaga de chinches.

They don't call it this in their paper, but one of my students is working out an aesthetics of PRAIRYERTH based on a quote Heat-Moon includes which states that "the prairie is at the center of our national identity," and I am most definitely here for it.
Last week, I'd extended some grace to a student in need of it, and today they left this on my desk with a note reading, "Thanks for aloe-ing me to grow!"
All I can say is, I'm glad I didn't have to teach this afternoon, because the room got very dusty there for a while.
