The third thematic session of the China–Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum, “Unlocking the Blue Economy and Strengthening Food Security,” explored investment and technological cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture and agriculture. His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu attended the opening ceremony of the China–Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum, held alongside Maldives Expo 2026, and delivered remarks emphasising that the Maldives is open to responsible investment and committed to ensuring its success. State Minister @AnthuSH and Ministry officials held a meeting today with Mr. Kondo Shunsuke, Charge’ d’ affaires ad interim and Mr. Ota Yoshu, Second Secretary, Head of Economic Cooperation of the Embassy of Japan to discuss Project Baukalo, with a focus on opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing in humane cat welfare and management. The discussion explored opportunities for collaboration, drawing on Japan’s well-renowned experience in animal welfare, responsible cat management, and community-based approaches. The discussion focussed on mass TNR programme, support and capacity building for the animal welfare sector, and educational opportunities to strengthen local expertise and public awareness, in line with Project Baukalo’s objectives.

State Minister, Mohamed Muththalib is representing Maldives at the FAO-led regional workshop in Bangkok to develop a guideline and template for reporting abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in South and Southeast Asia. The Maldives’ one-by-one fisheries do not contribute to ADLFG, yet our reefs continue to feel the impacts of ghost gear lost elsewhere in the region. Regional cooperation and collective action are essential to trace lost gear to its source and strengthen accountability. #OceanLitter #SustainableFisheries

Minister @Shiyamaldives met with Mr. Li Chaowei, Director General of the Department of Commerce of Yunnan Province, and his delegation to discuss opportunities for strengthening economic and commercial cooperation between the Maldives and Yunnan Province, with a particular focus on food production, fisheries, agriculture, and mariculture. During the meeting, Minister Shiyam highlighted the Maldives’ priorities in enhancing food security and increasing domestic food production through innovative and climate-resilient approaches. He underscored the importance of developing sustainable agricultural, fisheries, and aquaculture sectors to reduce import dependency, strengthen resilience, and support economic diversification. Both sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in agricultural technology, climate-smart farming practices, seed development, floriculture, value-added food processing, and capacity building. Discussions also focused on knowledge sharing, technical cooperation, and the adoption of modern technologies to improve productivity and in agricultural value chains and interest in advancing sustainable fisheries and mariculture development, noting the significant potential for collaboration in aquaculture, seafood processing, research, and technology transfer to support the sustainable utilization of marine resources. Mr. Li Chaowei expressed Yunnan Province’s interest in expanding cooperation with the Maldives and highlighted the province’s expertise in agriculture, food production, trade, logistics, and value-chain development. He conveyed Yunnan’s readiness to explore practical partnerships that would generate mutual economic benefits, facilitate investment and trade, and strengthen people-to-people and business-to-business linkages. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation and agreed to maintain close engagement to identify concrete initiatives in food production, agriculture, fisheries and mariculture, with a view to delivering tangible outcomes that contribute to sustainable development, food security, and economic prosperity.
