I’m sorry, did the Director of Georgia Poison Control say botanical Kratom was like coffee? Cheese? Nutmeg? No. He said OPIOIDS. How terribly inconvenient for the botanical kratom marketing department.
“These are opioids. These are opioid drugs. And like we have for the opioids, these have to be pharmacologically classified.” Important expert testimony from Dr. Gaylord Lopez, Director of Georgia Poison Control, on both “natural” kratom and its synthetic derivatives.

Just in case anyone missed Mac Haddow’s recap of the state of the kratom industry, we’ve prepared this brief audiovisual summary.

Again...from all-natural, God-given, organic, vegan, plant-based, sustainably harvested, ethically sourced, fair-trade, non-GMO, Indonesian botanical kratom.
At our kratom study committee, Diane Diver, the Executive Clinical Director of Recovery Place in Savannah, shared a story of a patient who started drinking kratom leaf tea for alcohol recovery before escalating to highly potent 7-OH. I asked her how often this happens.

Kratom treats everything, apparently, except the industry’s chronic shortage of medical evidence. We created a registry of physicians who recommend it. Actual doctors. Medical school, license, patients. The works. We even numbered the list. 1. Surely someone can help us finish it. globalkratom.org/physician_k…

Excellent piece in City Journal. I wonder how many lawmakers would have put their names on a Kratom Consumer Protection Act protecting botanical kratom had they understood how readily its alkaloids can be used to produce these concentrated opioids. Rather important detail to leave out of the sales pitch. city-journal.org/article/kra…

They may dress it in the respectable language of “botanical kratom,” cloak it in promises of wellness, and insist the public has misunderstood the science. But no amount of botanical poetry can repeal opioid pharmacology. Across America, communities are drawing their own conclusions. globalkratom.org/bans/

Georgia is calling on convenience stores and vape shops to take kratom off their shelves. Here’s one retailer worth asking directly: Circle K. We’ve made it ridiculously easy to send corporate a message. Two minutes, no postage, and not a single legislative hearing required. antikratom.org/circle.html
I’m calling on each and every convenience store and vape shop in this state — do the right thing. Remove these dangerous kratom products from your shelves immediately. Side with safety and put our children first.

At some point, we might consider cutting off the source: that all-natural, God-given, organic, vegan, sustainably marketed, BOTANICAL KRATOM. You know, the plant supplying the alkaloids everyone suddenly wants to pretend have nothing to do with kratom. sf.gov/news-fatal-overdose-i…

No, I think we’ll keep calling it all KRATOM. You don’t get to divorce the plant from its own alkaloids just because the death certificates make it look bad. And perhaps you’ve seen Dr. Andrew Kolodny’s delightfully titled paper, “Kratom Is an Opioid.” Not “Kratom Is an Opioid Unless the American Kratom Association Would Prefer the Name Botanical.”
Calling every incident a "kratom death" before completing comprehensive toxicology testing is speculation, not science. Media and law enforcement must differentiate natural leaf from synthetic compounds found at scenes.

JUST IN: Kratom is an opioid, a poison center leader and a longtime opioid crisis researcher argue in a new journal editorial. Dr. Andrew Kolodny of Brandeis University and Dr. Christopher Holstege, director of UVA Health's Blue Ridge Poison Center, make the case in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, rejecting the kratom industry's claim that its product is not an opioid. Kratom's main alkaloid, mitragynine, activates the mu-opioid receptor, the same target as morphine. The liver converts it into 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a far more potent opioid, according to the editorial. Poison centers took a record 3,434 kratom exposure reports in 2025, up from 258 in 2015. About 1 in 4 single-substance cases ended in a hospital stay, the editorial notes. "Kratom meets both the pharmacological and functional definitions of an opioid," the authors write. They say a 7-OH-only approach "rests on a false premise," because leaf kratom produces 7-OH in the body. The editorial comes as the Justice Department loosened its proposed 7-OH threshold this month, and as a bipartisan push in the Senate seeks to schedule the whole kratom plant.

We at the Anti-Kratom Association extend our sincerest condolences to MIT45’s parent company, Diversified Botanics, upon its Chapter 11 filing. Apparently, the company went from $98 million in annualized revenue to approximately $30 million, while facing wrongful-death litigation and regulatory scrutiny. We respectfully inquire whether bankruptcy is among the many wellness benefits of kratom. petition11.com/p/diversified…

If Mac Haddow testified before your legislative committee and you believed him, you ought to be embarrassed. He’s now waving around a 2016 study on kratom adulterated with elevated 7-OH to discredit a grieving mother. Yet somehow, that particular finding never earned a clear warning in the years of written testimony I reviewed. Apparently, the science was worth weaponizing against a mother who buried her son, but not worth mentioning to the lawmakers charged with protecting him. Quite a remarkable time for the truth to become convenient. antikratom.org/advocate/mac2… #IALegis #MDGA #PaLegis #MSLeg #GAPol #FLLeg #Kratom #7OH

…and did we mention it’s an OPIOID? You can call it botanical, natural, ancient or a gift from Mother Nature. You can even hire lobbyists to call it a food. But you cannot lobby your way out of pharmacology. KRATOM IS AN OPIOID. ovid.com/jnls/psychopharmaco…
