Barbarian: “I CAST MAGE ARMOR!”
GM: “You can’t cast that, you’re a barbarian.”
Barbarian: *Grapples the wizard, holds him up as cover*
Hey! You may not think my traps “realistic” but have you considered that:
1) I’m Chaotic Evil;
2) I’m a high-level wizard;
3) I’m spiteful;
4) I did it for the LOLZ.
The deadliest trap I ever used:
Here's how it worked. If the player falls into the pit, he can't see anything. Whipped cream is opaque. Even blocks darkvision. The other players also can't see him. If they try to use ropes to fish him out, the ropes float on top. Meanwhile they can't hear him talking and eventually the victim expires with no oxygen.
In my game they finally attached a mace to the rope so it would sink into the whipped cream. But the victim couldn't SEE the rope and had to grope for it.
Now I can see that you might say I'm too mean, but there are fairly obviously several ways to get him out of the pit (besides eating the whipped cream). How many can you think of?
(And if you want to argue that whipped cream isn't "realistic" may I point you to Tomb of Horrors?)
Dark Nights: Metal/DC: Death Metal and their consequences have been a disaster for DC Comics.
This Absolute Batman… thing… looks like something an edgy teenager would come up with.
The current version of the world’s most popular roleplaying game vs Old-School retroclones
It’s the Ship of Theseus.
Neither are D&D.
Both are D&D.
Yes.
“Vecna Lives”, “Vecna Reborn”, and “Die, Vecna, Die!” defined the character.
3.Xe further refined the Archlich’s image.
4e mentions him but the gods really kind of take a backseat in that short-lived edition.
But there’s a shift in spirit in the 5e era that happens… with the emergence of Critical Role and it’s exacerbated by Stranger Things.
Vecna suddenly became the “it” villain. WotC really wanted him to be the “Thanos” of the D&D multiverse (laughable considering the established character motivations and methodology).
They shift him from being a bitter, scheming, patient, obsessive, vindictive competitor whose meticulous plots are aimed at subverting his rival gods, changing him to a nihilistic, cataclysmic, existential threat to the concept of existence itself (Tharizdun could not be reached for comment but is believed to be annoyed at the infringement).

Far as I'm concerned, THIS is Vecna - solidified in the 3.5 era... Yes there's some modern in it in that he was once a man in ancient Oerth and had various tragic events in his life that guided him to his evil path. But he's clearly evil and no way around it. A neat "Origin" story though V2 seems to have never been made...
They also had some good adventures published. Him trapped in Raveloft for a while after a celestial shake-up where Orcus died, etc.
Hate to imagine the 💩"Modern Audience" WizDorks of the Woke chewed up and 💩out and stapled "Vecna" on the made in China boxes... probably stinks worse than Blaatezu...
If nothing else, the aftermath of that adventure created a bunch of material in the metaversal space of my setting where I can now unleash all my old-school gaming shenanigans.
My players have been rocked by the old-school reversion of the setting as a result.

Ran it. Gutted it and used it for parts (because my players are mostly newbies who came from “Stranger Things” and were all like “Oooooh Vecna!”). My D&D IS explicitly a multiverse but it’s not the pale, anemic, wasted imitation of a multiverse that this thing had in it.
Yes!
Does anyone play BX/OSE D&D anymore?!

Reed is a super-smart stretchy guy.
Plastic Man can turn into other things, metamorphing into bulldozers, dinosaurs, and all sorts of other things. He can mimic voices, he’s invulnerable, has density control, regeneration…
Much as I love Reed, Eel O’Brien wins.
“I saw it on TikTok…”
Me: “This isn’t TikTok. RTFM. We’ll come back to you when you figure out what you’re doing. Brad, it’s your turn.”
So… he’s not Batman then
James Gunn says Batman's parents won't die in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, giving Bruce Wayne a completely different origin story from previous Batman adaptations.
