If the purpose of the First Amendment were to protect popular, agreeable, inoffensive, uncontroversial, and loving speech, there would be no need for a First Amendment. Popular speech is protected by its own popularity.
The First Amendment exists to protect the opposite: not speech that is widely loved but speech that is widely hated; not speech that warms the heart but speech that offends the soul and shocks the conscience.

The great irony of Kamala is that there was no way she was winning an open Democratic primary, but she has a reasonable chance of winning the election versus Trump.
This speaks to the great operational dysfunction in the Democratic party. A staggering defeat may be good for them to reorganize. Today's Democratic establishment seem more interested in propagating power rather than serving their constituency. No wonder that we GenX moderate progressives have been shocked by how our ideology has been debased into idolatry.
The Democratic party of today no longer engenders the combination of pragmatic and progressive ideals for which I grew up voting. I no longer see the continuity from JFK, LBJ, Carter, and Clinton. Even Obama turned out to be rather moderate.
An incumbent party winning in an era of inflation would be a rare circumstance indeed. Had the Republicans found a strong candidate besides Trump, well... who knows actually. The cycle of each party deferring to their populist extremes may even favor someone like Trump.
