David lusted for Bathsheba in the heart and by sight before he summoned her to his bedroom. That adultery then led to his murder of Uriah on the battlefield to cover up his adultery. Men especially must avert our eyes and minds from sin, and we must be sure, women especially, to present ourselves in dress and words chastely and purely. You can sin by lusting after the object of your affection, or by intentionally becoming the sinful object of affection. Male lust and female immodesty are comparable sins. But in our day, a man visibly lusting and staring down a woman, practically drooling, would rightly be condemned as sinful and perverse, yet women prance about in what is essentially tight-fitting underwear and if you say a word about this and rebuke it, you are the bad guy, you are the pervert, you are oppressing women. This is feminized egalitarianism in action. Calvin rightly condemned David’s heinous sin with Bathsheba, calling him a brute, virtually possessed by the devil, seducing and ravishing Bathsheba. But he also says of Bathsheba that “she should have exercised discretion, so as not to be seen. For a chaste and upright woman will not show herself in such a way as to allure men, nor be like a net of the devil to ‘start a fire’. Bathsheba, therefore, was immodest in that regard.” Now Calvin places the weight of blame and guilt on David to be sure, but he doesn’t regard Bathsheba as completely innocent, even when she was privately bathing! She should have noted her surroundings and realized her nakedness could be viewed from certain vantage points, even the King. But today, women openly parade their nakedness like a “gay pride” parade, and to say anything against it will lead to even Christian pastors rebuking you for “attacking” women.
