NBC paid Conan O'Brien a reported $33 million to stop hosting The Tonight Show, seven months after he got it. The show went back to Jay Leno. Asked if Leno acted honorably, Conan said he couldn't answer that. "I would not have come back six months later. But that's me." He could have kept the show at five past midnight, after Leno. He said no. In the video below, Conan gets one last night on NBC to say anything he wants, and uses it to thank NBC. Then Leno tells his own audience he has "chosen to stay on the Titanic," and Conan sits down with 60 Minutes in May 2010 and says the line himself. NBC had promised Conan the show in 2004. Leno handed it over in May 2009 and moved to a new show at 10 p.m. Its ratings fell. In January 2010, NBC decided to give Leno his old late-night slot back. The settlement came to $45 million. About $12 million of it went to Conan's staff. The case for Leno: he never wanted to leave. He told Oprah he was "number one right up until the day we left," and that NBC wouldn't release him from his contract. "They offered me my old job back," he said. $33 million in January 2010 is about $51 million today. Leno left The Tonight Show for good in 2014, and Jimmy Fallon took over. SiriusXM bought Conan's podcast company for a reported $150 million, and in March he will host the Oscars for the third year in a row. Would you take $33 million to hand your dream job back to the man you replaced?

Mel Gibson paid Robert Downey Jr.'s insurance bond when no insurer would cover him. Eight years later, with Gibson's own career in ruins, Downey asked Hollywood to forgive him. In 2003, Downey was coming off years of drug arrests, and no insurance company would cover him on a film set. Gibson, a producer on The Singing Detective, covered the insurance bond himself so Downey could play the lead. Downey has said Gibson also told him not to give up hope and urged him to find his faith. The only thing Gibson asked in return was that someday Downey help the next guy. In 2006, Gibson was arrested in Malibu, and his own career collapsed. In October 2011, Downey received the American Cinematheque Award and asked Gibson to present it. In the video below, Downey tells the room why he chose him. About that old favor, he says Gibson "didn't imagine the next guy would be him." Then he urged Hollywood to forgive his friend. Gibson later told Esquire it was "a bold and generous and kind gesture." Did Downey owe Gibson that speech, or was it a risk nobody else in Hollywood was willing to take?

Rocky 3 will always be my favorite. It had Hulk Hogan as Thunder Lips and, of course, Mr. T as Clubber Lang. Rocky 4 was my next favorite. This is a great story about them making it as realistic as possible. I couldn't imagine being hit this hard in any scenario, never mind for making it look realistic. 🥊🩺🩻🙏💥

ESPN told Ryan Clark to apologize OR ELSE… He refused 😳 “I didn’t tell a lie, I didn’t misstate a fact, so there’s really nothing to apologize for” He details the conversations with Scott Van Pelt and ESPN execs following his comments on the Karen Lacy situation on SportsCenter, and how the fallout nearly pushed him to quit entirely.
