It’s unreal the ability of waterhemp to germinate after harvest and all the way to freeze up. These plants grew after the wheat was harvested a month ago. #Scout2026

Keep an eye out for sunflower rust in the top 4 leaves and for progression of the disease as well. When rust achieves 1% coverage on those top 4 leaves, at or prior to bloom, fungicides should now be considered. It’s been a great year for disease development!

Banded sunflower moths are out and about, laying eggs and likely hatched in some fields as well.

The short answer is yes, but there are important rules and regulations to follow.

Last stop is weeds! For many herbicide applications, using higher water volumes helps to penetrate dense crop canopies, and allow you to use a coarser spray, which reduces the risk of spray drift. The blue dots on these plates show what that water volume difference looks like!
We’re talking insects! Did you know there are different kinds of thresholds? Nominal thresholds are based on experience & observations from experts. Many of our insect thresholds are nominal! True economic thresholds are based on scientific research. (+Bonus true armyworm pics!)
Second station of the day is diseases with @MCA_MorganCott! End of May to end of June is the right time to look for seedling diseases in corn, especially when soils are cool and wet. But keep in mind, injury caused by environment and insects can be confused with seedling disease!
