Medicine note: The patient coughed 3 times when I was talking to them, the cough makes me suspicious they have one of the following 17 conditions. Will initiate a broad work up.

The consumption of 0 calorie rather than sugar sweetened beverages has not been clearly shown to decrease weight gain. Studies assessing whether consumption of non-absorbable sweeteners compared to absorbable sweeteners minimizes weight gain have yielded conflicting results. It is proposed that non-absorbable sweeteners may alter the composition of the intestinal bacteria in a fashion that results in metabolic changes that can interfere with weight loss. They may also be associated with increased sugar craving.

An evaluation in Portugal, where the food supply is not fortified with folic acid, found low folate status in more than 60% of people with chronic heavy alcohol use.
