Image-Pro for Molecular Science! Infertility affects approximately 186 million people, representing 8-12% of reproductive-aged couples worldwide. Environmental and occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI) – a group A carcinogen, mutagenic, and teratogenic – causes female reproductive failures and infertility. However, the integrated molecular mechanism of Cr(VI)-induced oocyte defects is currently not well understood. In a recent groundbreaking study, scientists used Image-Pro to investigate the mechanism of Cr(VI) in causing meiotic disruption of MII oocytes, leading to oocyte incompetence in super-ovulated rats. Its advanced capabilities were employed to quantify protein expression levels in immunofluorescent images of oocytes from rats, measuring the intensity of staining for each protein. Image-Pro for Neurology! Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II is a neurological disorder whose pathogenesis and drug resistance still cannot be satisfactorily explained through current molecular genetics knowledge. In the recent study "Alteration of GABAergic neurons and abnormality of NKCC1/KCC2 in focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type Ⅱ lesions", Image-Pro proved instrumental. Researchers harnessed the software to observe the expressions of GAD67 (a marker of active GABAergic neuron), NKCC1, and KCC2, as well as measure the average absorbance of NKCC1 positive expressions across 20 cases of FCD II. This led to intriguing discoveries, such as the significantly decreased density of GABAergic neurons in focal dysplastic regions compared to the normal cerebral cortex. Image-Pro for Marine Biology! The growing pressures on marine ecosystems makes it important to study the health and longevity of marine organisms. Sclerochronological research, for example, analyses growth increments in hard tissues of marine species to understand environmental influences on their development. Central to these studies is the use of powerful image analysis software like Image-Pro. In a recent study “Developing a sclerochronology network in the Adriatic Sea: Growth synchrony among populations of Callista chione” Image-Pro played an instrumental role. Researchers utilized the software to measure the growth increments in acetate peel replicas of live collected samples from three distinct locations to carry out visual cross-dating of samples. Image-Pro for Sustainable Materials & Technologies! Loess is an aeolian deposit that covers about 10% of the global land area. It has a high porosity and unstable structure, which can cause geological hazards, negatively impacting people's lives and economies. While stabilizing loess is essential to preventing engineering problems, traditional stabilizers, such as lime, cement, and fly ash, are becoming less viable due to their high greenhouse gas emissions. One alternative stabilizer that has been promising is silica fume. And image analysis plays a key role in finding out the extent to which it can improve the mechanical strength of loess foundations. In this study, scientists used Image-Pro to explore the microstructure and quantify the microstructural parameters. Through techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDXS, the paper explains the variation in mechanical properties of samples with different silica fume content.
