For five years, I've answered DMs and emails about how I left academia and the US. Let me tackle the academia part first.
I left academia for an ENTRY-LEVEL, fully remote tech sales role that paid me more money than my tenure-track job.

I cooked turnip greens with smoked turkey. Roasted sweet potatoes. Red beans and rice. And my oxtails are slow cooking. A fall visit to the U.S. south.

If you’re having a bad day, just think about how Jair Bolsonaro is going to die in prison 🫶🏽
I’m planning a Kenya to Tanzania AFCON 2027 trip. I’m a fair-weather soccer fan but I love East Africa!

Q-Tip made the "Electric Relaxation" beat in Phife Dawg's grandmother's basement. She'd given him a key.
Phife came home, heard Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew" drifting up from below and ran downstairs without even saying hi to grandma: “Yo, what the hell is that?!”

America isn't witnessing the rise of fascism. It's watching its own fascist foundations become impossible to conceal. The empire isn't abandoning its traditions; it's doubling down. The mask is slipping, and the ruling class is done pretending. #USImperialism

Not enough people know this: in practice, the IMF is controlled by the US.
The US is the only country that has de facto veto power at the IMF because the biggest decisions require an 85% supermajority of total voting power. The US' vote share is 16.5%
This was by design, and the supermajority threshold was actually moved in 1978 so that the US vote share would continue to give the country veto power.
We should not see the IMF as an organisation that serves global development.
We should see is as an organisation that serves mainly Western interests — and, above all, US interests.
