It was a great pleasure for me to attend the Amesbury RBL Poppy Launch on Saturday morning. Even managed to get in the middle.. I'm learning the 'dark arts'!
I spent the day at Marlborough College today having been invited by my fellow Councillor (and friend) Monica Devendran to the 'Ending Violence Against Women & Girls Summit 2026'. Some incredibly thought provoking speeches and presentations by some inspirational speakers. My overwhelming feeling at the end of the day is how ignorant I am to the plight of 50% of the population, despite having been on this planet for three score years. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6y4…
An interesting day on Tuesday the 20th of October at the Full Wiltshire Council in County Hall, Trowbridge.
The Council had invited in an Independent Remuneration Panel to look at the basic expenses paid to Councillors and the additional expenses paid for holding positions such as Council Leader, Cabinet member, Chair of a Committee etc.
The panel (4 of them, all highly experienced and highly qualified.. and paid accordingly) took a huge amount of testimony and evidence from various Councillors. They drew up a list of 25 recommendations which would simplify the whole system, bring it into line with comparative systems in other Councils and, as a bonus, save taxpayers £224,000.
For some reason known best to them, the Lib Dem Council Leader with his entire party, the Tory Leader and his entire party decided to remove every single saving but one giving a grand total of £5000. Nothing, of course, to do with the fact that they were the people from whom the savings (via reduced allowances) were to be made.
The Councillors of my party tried to amend the motion to accept the entire package.. and save £224,000 but that was defeated. The Council then voted for the butchered motion which passed by 75 votes to 11. Every single Reform member present was in that 11. Even the man who was only elected five days previous voted to let his boss keep the additional £20K+ he was about to lose.
Troughs and gravy trains come to mind.
Utterly despicable.
Brilliant investigation by @thetimes
Insight team into a relatively recent incident in Syria where soldiers took split second decisions in the heat of combat.
One SAS soldier's home was raided at night time by the Royal Military Police who asked them to remove the baby from the cot incase he had hidden anything there.
One SAS soldier "forfeited his lifelong savings to pay for legal support after the Ministry of Defence capped its support to legal aid and a handout of no more than £500".
Unsurprisingly, all the SAS soldiers investigated over two deaths in Syria have now left the military.
Despite no charges, they remain on a police database which has stopped them living abroad.

After World War II British Foreign Policy was dominated by the US. When we joined the EU it was set in Brussels. After Brexit it returned to Washington. Now it is set in Kyiv.
Britain is not sovereign. We are led by a political class unable to put British people first.
This Tory Party conference sign looks familiar. I'm fairly sure that Turquoise/Union Jack/Arrow logo is something I've seen elsewhere?
A fascinating site.

The Welsh Tories just voted against Reform’s motion to deny social housing to foreign nationals.
The Tories will never change.

That archive file of discussions with the Polish defence staff in 1939, was only declassified by the British Government in 1990.
Sixty years held from public view.
And people wonder why I keep finding things which "dont agree" with the books they read.

How do we find out what year this document was declassified?
It's interesting how literally no book I've read ever mentions this document, even 'revisionist' ones.

When you wonder whether the Tory party has reflected on its failures, begun remaking itself for the future, and rid itself of the rotten core, ask yourself: why has Penny Mordaunt been picked as a candidate again?
The leader has changed. The people running the show have not.

Do these people know that new arrivals add in to the ones already here?
Every single one who arrives here makes us poorer.
Every single one makes us more at risk.
Every single one takes resources that could be used by a British citizen.
..and they are still coming.

"We flooded the country with low skilled migrants, created the channel crisis with our inaction, raised taxes, gutted the armed forces - and you should be grateful for it" is quite the pitch.

Ah intent. That would be the Hamas charter to wipe out Israel and everyone in it. Try to do your own thinking instead of relying on a do-gooder international legal construct which bears no actual resemblance to what genocide is. The people you shill for were offered a two state solution in 2000. They turned it down. Arafat said he didn’t want to end the grievance. Worst political decision I’ve ever seen. Then elected a terrorist group who spent all their money on tunnels and death while ignoring the needs of their own people. Then launched a raid of barbaric horror hoping to get a reaction. Duly got one. Why are you so taken with these people? Most of the Arab countries don’t give a monkeys about them, see them as a problem. But they’re a greater cause celebre than the Uighurs or any other victims. The conclusion has to be that you have a weird white guilt loathing of the Jews. If you genuinely cared for Arab outreach as your organisation name suggests you’d be demanding new Palestinian leadership and a peace deal between Israel and the Gulf states which might just pave the way for some sort of deal on the Palestinians. Instead you’re whanging on about genocide and pursuing a solution which the Palestinians themselves have repeatedly rejected
