Crypto market cap: ~$4T. Global equities market cap: ~$100T. 25x bigger. Bringing the outdated financial system onchain is a huge opportunity.

I still think the greatest thing crypto has accomplished is rebranding "betting" to "prediction markets" right up there with rebranding salt and rocks as "electrolytes"

The Internet of Machines needs a bank, and Cloudflare is building the vault. It's a payment system for AI agents that leverages an infrastructure already reaching 95% of the connected world, processing transactions at network speed, not blockchain speed. Cloudflare's BY402 protocol, developed in partnership with Coinbase, is a new payment system designed to handle instant, automated, and high-frequency microtransactions for AI agents. The system uses a US dollar-backed stablecoin called Net Dollar and a rarely-used HTTP code (402) to enable payments at network speed rather than blockchain speed How it works: The core idea is to decouple trust from settlement. Instead of waiting for a transaction to be confirmed on a blockchain, an AI agent sends a cryptographically signed promise of payment (a digital IOU). The server instantly validates this signature, trusts the promise, and delivers the data or service. The actual money, the Net Dollars, is only moved later, often bundled and aggregated daily or weekly (and the data is later settled on the blockchain). Cloudflare's end game is ecosystem lock-in. By offering a cheap payment rail with near-zero transaction costs, Net Dollar acts as a "hook" to pull AI agents deeper into Cloudflare's higher-margin services like their Workers platform or R2 storage. While this flies in the face of decentralized Web3 ideology, for Cloudflare's target market of large enterprise AI and financial institutions, having a known, regulated entity in the middle is seen as a feature, not a bug. These companies require a clear counterparty, audits, and compliance with regulations, which are difficult to guarantee in a fully decentralized system

πŸ“Š Market thesis: The L2 landscape is converging toward ZK rollups faster than anticipated. The fundamentals have shifted dramatically. Optimistic rollups solved Ethereum's scalability crisis when ZK wasn't production-ready. That era is ending. The data tells the story: β†’ Proving costs down 90%+ from 2022 highs β†’ ZK-EVM compatibility reaching production standards β†’ 7-day withdrawal windows becoming a competitive disadvantage β†’ Bridge security incidents driving demand for cryptographic guarantees The technical advantages are compounding: - Instant finality vs week-long challenge periods - Mathematical security vs economic game theory - Native interoperability vs trusted bridges - Compressed state proofs vs full transaction data Even established OP Stack chains are integrating ZK verification layers for faster exits and enhanced security. The question is which networks adapt first and maintain their competitive position. The infrastructure, economics, and user expectations are all aligning toward validity proofs as the dominant L2 architecture. Credits: @AramMughalyan - these insights align with our inhouse analysis
