5. Another @ICRAR PhD student, Katy Proctor (@AstroK80), describing her work on intra-halo light and what it can tell us about galaxy assembly. Very cool research and I’m looking forward to seeing where this work goes 🌟

ANU say that it’s unethical to stick to the government stipend amount 🤔Any plans to match this at @uwanews? @UWAresearch @ProfChakma @perth_meso_dr @colmer_tim
Very happy to hear that ANU is raising the minimum PhD stipend from $28,854 to $34,000 in Oct - an increase of about $100 a week (scholarships are tax-free). Still not much money but definitely heading in the right direction.

Despite the name, some black holes effectively “shine” as they suck up nearby material with such force that they begin to glow. New research by @ICRAR's @_jessthorne + @SabineBellstedt reveals a new method for detecting these active black holes. @uwanews bit.ly/3DUJ3Ot

I’ve put together an AGN unification diagram split into radio loud/quiet and low/high EM power. I’ve added rings to show whether a particular combination of radio emission+EM power+geometry is expected to produce broad or narrow emission lines, or MIR, radio, or X-ray emission.

Well done to @AstroK80 and her colleagues for making their 2020 ESO Summer Studentships a success, despite not getting to travel to ESO HQ. Read more about it in AAL's latest ESO Blog: astronomyaustralia.org.au/es…
It was great to get the chance to present the work of my @ESO internship last night at the mini-symposium on galaxy and AGN evolution. Also great that we managed to make a timezone difference of 13 hours between speakers work!!

A study in 2014 found that 25% of people couldn't name a single female scientist. So this #IWD here's 10 female astrophysicists to celebrate I am forever grateful to them for blazing a trail through history so that I can do the job I love today #IWD2021 youtu.be/damkjiFNn5E

Two Latin words for a star or constellation: 'aster' and 'sidus'. They glimmer across English: disaster: an ill-starred event. asterisk: a little star. astronaut: a star-sailor. consider: to observe the stars. desire: to wish upon a star.
