I've been building this game for 5 years. It's not been easy! A struggle most times.
The performance has always been shit. The story huge and unwieldly. The visuals, gameplay, systems, all needing attention. But guess what? I'm nearing the end. And I'm excited to share the result of so much effort.
I dropped a new demo. Here's a trailer for it. This trailer features a taste of the brand new music being created for The Majestic by super-talented composer Hew Wagner (@hewwagner), whom composed my first game, The Companion.
What excites me about this Demo is that it's been polished, optimized, and shows promise for the final game. This Demo is optimized for Steamdeck and has been tested on as low as a GTX 1070 (8gb vram) graphics card. It has been VERY difficult to get to this point. I can't stress that enough.
I've worried and toiled over performance for years and years. I had faith it could get to a satisfactory point, but never really knowing. My solace has been burying myself in the story, working with the characters, creating their narrative... forgetting there was this looming dread to deal with.
I've been pouring everything I could into this game. Diagnosing and analyzing every single word of the script. Obsessing over little details. Scrapping and changing ideas. I've even released a demo three times prior. The first in 2023. I can't believe it's 3 years later. I launched those prior versions with hopes of obtaining insight and ideas... and I did. The feedback set me on the path forward. Now here we are. Nearing the end.
This trailer is simply for the Demo: a 20-30 minute experience. It's still not version 1.0. I reserve that for the February NextFest. There is more to add and polish. Mostly sound stuff. And the 1.0 Demo might unlock a few more objectives. But that's it. The bulk is here. Going forward means getting the entire game up to this level of quality and performance.
Once that's achieved, release will be upon us. Please check it out, enjoy, and let me know how it goes. I truly hope you have an amazing experience and will look forward to the full release.

I want flight to be visually interesting. Lots of sky elements to grab your attention: large celestial bodies, interesting cloud formations, flickering lights from towns below, volumetric plumes rising from rubble, skybeams and many glowing points of interest

The last big speaking roles have been cast and recorded and after looking at the credits for my game, I just can't believe it. Over 20 Actors providing amazing performances to bring this world to life. #wishlistwednesday #voiceacting #indiegame
Part of the fantasy in this game is the ability to soar through a huge beautiful world without any guardrails.

Thoughts on Credits being earned in games? Pros/Cons? If the credits are freely available externally, then earning them in-game seems fine?
I avoid the Epic launcher at all cost, and it is exactly because speed is horrendous. I will gladly use the new one once it supports Unreal developers. Right now its for gamers only.
With the new Epic Launcher making the rounds... I'm really glad they are working on this, and aiming to improve it. The old one's been really bad for ages now.
If you're an enthusiast and enjoy bug testing and reporting issues, awesome, go for it!
But... if you're a developer, I'd advise staying away, for now. The new launcher doesn't pick up your UE projects outside the default directory, it also removed the "UnrealVersionSelector.exe", which is what is used for selecting the correct UE version when a .uproject is opened. Means you have to manually select the unreal engine again every time you open a project that may be in a different version.
Some users are reporting that going back to the current/legacy launcher also removes your UE installs.
I'll admit that the front-end is sick, buttery smooth, that's a huge step forward.
But we're developers. We don't have time to beta test. We need robust software that's been tested. We have work to get done.
To swap out all of the trees in my game, I am using a Custom Editor Utility that creates the new ISKM components and removes the old ISM/HISM components.

Good morning! I had to resolve some nasty performance issues from the skeletal foliage (expected), but happy to report that its going well now. Just ironing out some Steam Deck specific items. Learn more about the game from the Kickstarter, go check it out kickstarter.com/projects/stu…
I have replaced all trees in this level with the new skeletal foliage that I've previewed before. It's looking good! I'm still testing how it performs. And there is still a LOT left to do to get ALL levels up to this point. #screenshotsaturday

I've been redoing all my tree assets using the Procedural Vegetation Editor. Higher fidelity, lower disk space, better streaming. Still experimental, so I'm treading carefully, but should be good-to-go by release. Also, Kickstarter Day 1: 13% funded so far, thank you!

Will you be playing on day one? 👀
Hello #wishlistwedneday, all the trees in my world are about to be swapped out for skeletal based foliage. If performance is maintained, this will offer even greater visual fidelity. Fingers crossed! Today is also the day the Kickstarter campaign begins. Check it out!

Happy #screenshotsaturday! The game is getting GOOD. Almost all VO is now recorded. (implementing is another story). Lots of bugs fixed, polish, optimization. Feeling awesome. Also, a super small Kickstarter is going up this week. There will be some Early Bird rewards. Exciting!
I implemented a simple way to change appearances of the character. The appearance carries over to particle FX too. A simple feature that rewards discovery.
