When Gran (Great Grandmother) walked into a room, everyone waited for her to settle & speak first. In the early 60’s when my sister was around 5, she recalls sitting on Gran’s kitchen floor in Curling, NL, with several other family members present, as was Nanny - my Grandmother. At one point my sister said to Nanny: β€˜You look like an Eskimo.’ The room fell silent and Gran yelled at my sister: ’DON’T YOU SAY THAT ABOUT YOUR NANNY AGAIN! THEY SHOOT INDIANS HERE AND GET $50 FOR IT.’ Gran was proud, but understood the necessity of blending in to survive colonialism. Today I hope to honour her by celebrating her.
