If you are taking a car ride with a senior football player the next few days, be mindful of what they are dealing with at so many levels, but this weekend 1,000s of players will take their last snap, so will have a bus ride back to school, others walk out the locker room door, all of them will have moments of doubt, fear, anxiety, if you are in that front seat it's ok if they are quiet, still make that same stop for food, be available but don't press the issue and just imagine losing a best friend you've had for 15-20 years

“Don’t ever coach a player for who they are today, you have to coach them for what you know they can become.”
A coach who cares about you won’t let your current habits limit your future.
That’s why they keep asking for more. They believe there’s more in you.

Many of you asked for the context of the quote I shared yesterday. It's one of my favorite parts of the book. Here it is:
"Caring is cool. Nonchalance is a cop-out. Pour your heart and soul into what you love. You don’t get unlimited chances. Try hard. Give your all. Give a damn.
When you hold yourself back because you fear failure or looking ‘uncool,’ you sacrifice growth and potential (and mastery and fulfillment and richness and love and all the other good stuff in life) for short-term safety and comfort. It’s a trap. Get over it.
Fear and insecurity are part of human nature. You can either go through the motions and be superficially cool (but actually boring). Or you can step into the arena, lay it on the line, care deeply, make yourself vulnerable, and fully live your one and only life.
The world doesn’t need more mediocrity or going through the motions. The world needs more people putting themselves out there and giving it their all. The world needs more people who have the guts to care.
The best athletes care deeply.
The best artists care deeply.
The best leaders care deeply.
The best coaches care deeply.
The best teachers care deeply.
The best doctors care deeply.
The best writers care deeply.
The best scientists care deeply.
The best parents care deeply.
Caring deeply is the cost of admission to a big and textured life.
Try hard and give a damn."

I've just learned that my favorite country artist of all time, and a man I called "Uncle John" for the past 20 years has passed away. The great and unmatched John Anderson...He loved Jesus, and his family and his country. He was a massive influence on me in more ways that I can count. I love you, Uncle John.
