Huge drop in Google searches for various health disinformation topics following the Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centers.
It makes you wonder how much of the “turbo cancer, ivermectin” nonsense is really fueled by Russian bots, & how many Americans they’ve killed…

Six years ago, EMPoweRx was just an idea: build the EM pharmacy conference we wished existed. No dress code. Affordable. Resident posters. networking. Hands-on skills. In 2027, nearly half the program will be workshops.

Just when the USMLE loses its Jehovah's Witness transfusion ethics question, they gain a botched lethal injection resuscitation ethics question.
Christa Pike, who survived Tennessee's attempt to execute her via lethal injection, is intubated, on a ventilator, and remains unconscious in a Nashville-area hospital, her attorneys said in a court filing.

BREAKING: Exxon Mobil has shut down one of the largest diesel refineries in the Midwest, which produces ~11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel per day, due to outage issues.
This comes as diesel prices have already surged nearly 90% this year and the US has entered peak diesel demand season.
We expect to see diesel prices push toward $7.00/gallon.

People keep trying to make metoprolol & COPD a thing. They're not. They don't love each other, they don't hate each other - they're just indifferent to one another.
A few years ago there was an overblown trial in NEJM which tried implying that metoprolol *increased* mortality in COPD. I debunked the concept of metoprolol killing people on the blog here: emcrit.org/pulmcrit/metoprol…
This new trial will hopefully clarify this topic once and for all.
The bottom line on metoprolol & COPD:
🔑 COPD isn't an indication for metoprolol
🔑 COPD isn't a contraindication for metoprolol
🔑 COPD doesn't affect the risk/benefit ratio of metoprolol
🔑 Use metoprolol as indicated for cardiac indications based on the cardiology literature
This is actually really simple.

Conference RCT dumps sure are exciting, but here are some tough questions:
[1] What are the ethics of embargoing every cardiology RCT for months leading up to the conference? (If this is life-saving information, shouldn't it be released ASAP?)
[2] Do you think releasing all of these trials at once improves communication & understanding of them? (Or does it cause the less exciting RCTs to be overlooked?)
[3] Do journals & conferences actually improve ethical science communication or just serve their own best interests?

The CDC is alerting clinicians that individuals taking anti-CD20 therapies are especially vulnerable to neuroinvasive disease from tick- and mosquito-borne viruses. The CDC said it is issuing the warning now because the US “had an early and strong start to this year’s West Nile virus season and many weeks of the arbovirus transmission season remain.”
Anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies — which include rituximab and its biosimilars, ocrelizumab, ofatumumab, ublituximab, obinutuzumab, and ibritumomab tiuxetan — have warnings in labeling of the potential for serious infections, including West Nile virus. mdsc.pe/4cW4Mty
