🇬🇧 UK IMMIGRATION - VERIFIED UPDATE - 29 OCTOBER 2026
The UK Government announced major immigration changes in its Budget on 28 October 2026.
Here are 6 important updates for international students and skilled workers.
1. GRADUATE VISA: 2 YEARS FOR ELIGIBLE UNIVERSITIES
The government plans to retain a 2-year Graduate visa for graduates from high-compliance universities with strong employment outcomes.
Currently, eligible applicants who apply by 31 December 2026 can receive 2 years. Applications from 1 January 2027 are subject to the 18-month period under the published rules, except for doctoral graduates, who can receive 3 years.
The qualifying universities and implementation details are still to be confirmed.
2. SKILLED WORKER VISA: SALARY REQUIREMENTS
From spring 2027, the government plans to reduce occupation-specific minimum salary thresholds from the median wage to the 25th percentile.
The general salary threshold will also be updated using 2026 wage data.
These changes do not mean every sponsored worker will qualify for a lower salary.
3. MORE TIME TO FIND A NEW SPONSOR
The government plans to allow the highest-skilled sponsored workers up to 6 months to find another job if their employment ends.
Implementation is planned for 2027. The period will depend on how long the individual worked in their previous highly paid job.
This is not a guaranteed 6-month extension for every Skilled Worker visa holder.
4. SPONSORSHIP FEES: TAX CHANGE
From 28 October 2026, the government announced a tax exemption for qualifying employer payments covering the Immigration Skills Charge and Certificate of Sponsorship fees.
This is a tax change, not the abolition of sponsorship fees.
5. STUDENT VISA: MAINTENANCE FUNDS INCREASE
From 30 November 2026, the required monthly maintenance funds will increase to:
London: £1,570 per month
Outside London: £1,203 per month
For a 9-month period, this equals £14,130 in London and £10,827 outside London.
Applicants must also account for outstanding tuition fees and meet the applicable evidence requirements.
6. HIGH POTENTIAL INDIVIDUAL VISA EXPANSION
The government plans to expand the HPI visa to graduates with eligible qualifications from the world's top 150 institutions, alongside a proportional increase in the scheme's cap.
Eligibility will depend on the applicable rules and eligible institutions.
