A3: 98% of Lifeline calls do not require emergency services. Instead, evaluations & caller feedback show that Lifeline counselors are effective in reducing caller distress and suicidality, & help tens of thousands of people get through crises every day. #BHCrisisChat (2/2)

Agree completely, this is why LEO’s have become the default of the BH crisis response system. This system needs to completely be reversed. #BHJusticeChat

A5: Working in correctional settings can be challenging. We need to support and incentivize highly qualified professionals to provide the best possible care for people with mental illness who are incarcerated. #BHJusticeChat

Most mental health providers (like me) do not really understand the criminal justice system. We need more training on this topic...especially when it comes to individuals who have an intellectual/developmental disability and mental health dual diagnosis.

A2: Jails & EDs shouldn’t be the only option for someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Communities must expand the crisis services that are available to help. Learn more about what your community should consider: nami.org/divert-to-what. #BHJusticeChat
Question 2 for the #BHJusticeChat ⬇️

A1: People with mental illness are overly represented in the justice system.
37% of people incarcerated in state & federal prison -- and 44% of people incarcerated in jail -- have a history of mental illness.
People deserve help, not handcuffs. #BHJusticeChat
