At the funeral today for Stephen and David Clayton, Stephen’s wife, Katie, spoke—with her jaw wired shut from the accident. Wow. What a testimony. It starts at 38:50 min. on the livestream video here and ends around 1:02:40 (I’m not sure how long the video will be online at this URL): thenorthchurch.com/live/spec… Ecclesiastes 7:1–4: A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
Two of my former @BCS_MN students were in a tragic car accident this week: Stephen Clayton (MDiv '24) and Katie O'Shea Clayton (BA '25). Stephen and his son David are with the Lord. Please pray for Katie and John (her 11-month-old son) and her unborn child. Here's an opportunity to help a widow in her affliction (James 1:27): gofundme.com/f/support-for-t… Stephen was one of the finest men I helped to train—above-reproach character and highly competent. He came to my home on Saturday mornings to work out probably over 100 times. (We did a lot of weighted Murphs together.) I last talked to him when he attended our church's conference on the home nearly two months ago. He was full of joy and courage as he served as a lead pastor. He was a good man. He faithfully finished his race—far sooner than we expected. God is meticulously sovereign over a bouncing trailer tire. I think of Sarah Edwards’s letter to her daughter Esther shortly after Jonathan Edwards died from a smallpox inoculation: “My very dear child, What shall I say? A holy and good God has covered us with a dark cloud. O that we may kiss the rod, and lay our hands on our mouths! The Lord has done it. He has made me adore his goodness, that we had him so long. But my God lives; and he has my heart. O what a legacy my husband, and your father, has left us! We are all given to God; and there I am, and love to be.”

This new book calls masculine, high-agency Christian leaders to outwork and outsmart the world and says it’s time to stop making excuses and step into the arena.” It’s a bold challenge for the 21st-century American church, but one that ultimately misses the mark by redefining “winning” and “losing” according to conservative American values and optimistic eschatology rather than the priorities of Jesus and the apostles. thegospelcoalition.org/revie…

The Enduring Word is a remarkable new documentary produced by @crossway. It celebrates God’s providence for the 500-year history of English Bible translation—from William Tyndale’s 1526 New Testament to the ESV. crossway.org/articles/tyndal…
