This Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, we acknowledge the hidden toll wildland firefighting can take on firefighter health.
Interior is taking concrete steps, in partnership with @USDA, to advance critical work to address wildland fire exposures and strengthen protections for our dedicated wildland fire workforce.
All wildland firefighters, past and present, can help advance our knowledge in this field by signing up today for the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer at nfr.cdc.gov/.

Bright sunlight illuminates the smoke filling the air. On the forest floor ahead of him, burn piles glow with low flames while tendrils of denser smoke rise into the air. Plan. Prepare. Prevent. 🔥
In wildfire-prone areas, yard work can help protect your home. Create defensible space by pruning trees 6–10 ft up, removing dead debris, watering lawns, storing firewood away, and having a plan for family and pets.

In 2025, nearly 70,000 U.S. wildfires were human-caused, compared to just over 8,000 from lightning—but lightning fires burned more than half of all acres. Most starts are preventable; weather-driven fires can grow fast and go national. One less spark matters.
