The US has ruled Puerto Rico for longer than the Britain Raj. As Ghandi was winning independence, Puerto Ricans were browbeaten into accepting only limited self government. But even that has now been replaced by direct rule - stirring support for independence again, as @AlbertoMedinaPR explains in his @thenation piece. Note: By "browbeaten", I mean they were threatened with losing their war pensions and with economic disaster, while advocates of independence were imprisoned using draconian laws made in America and targeted for covert disruption by the FBI. My book has the details!

Free Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 “Notably, support for sovereignty is rising among political leaders outside of Puerto Rican bastions like New York and Pennsylvania. Former Missouri representative @CoriBush and fellow Missouri Democratic primary candidate Hartzell Gray came out in support for Puerto Rican sovereignty. So did @SenadoraJulie, who gave John Hickenlooper a scare in the Democratic primary for US Senate in Colorado.”
American leaders like @chrisrabb @DarializaforNY @CoriBush @HartzellForKC @SenadoraJulie @associatesmayra and more are standing on the right side if history. Read my piece in @thenation about why all progressives should support Puerto Rico’s independence: thenation.com/article/world/…

Puerto Rico's independence party (PIP) was formed in 1946 just as the US was sharpening the repressive tools of McCarthyism. Everyone opposed to colonialism was targeted as Washington tightened its grip on its vital military asset. But a nation's aspirations can't be crushed. Today, PIP is enjoying a surge in support as it celebrates its 80th anniversary. The status that masqueraded as 'free association' was exposed as a sham in 2016 when Washington used the colony's debt crisis to impose a fiscal board to control its finances. Puerto Rico was not even given the opportunity to file for bankruptcy protection, as a US city would. The word ‘debt’ is itself a misnomer. US politicians talk of Puerto Rico like it's a burden but colonial powers do not keep their possessions out of charity. It has served as a major US military base and test bed for all manner of nasty weapons. Its economy has been shaped for the coloniser's purposes, first as a supplier of sugar and later as a low-tax, cheap labour producer of pharmaceuticals and electrical goods. Recent years have seen its prime Caribbean coastal land plundered for development, pricing Puerto Ricans out of their own communities. The US has tried to destroy Puerto Rico's independence movement through repression and covert action for decades - but it has failed. Congratulations to PIP on its 80th anniversary. Puerto Rico necesita aliadas comprometidas. Ellas lo son y lo están. 🇵🇷

"If the government denies us democracy, then we exercise it here in the streets!" Puerto Ricans are fighting back against the "Esencia" multi-billion luxury megaproject, planned for Cabo Rojo on the southwestern coast. Opponents say it would destroy the coast's natural resources and fragile local ecosystems, while also displacing people within their own country.

The most “Puerto Ricans polled don't want independence” argument is so weak. We oppose colonial rule on principle, and while Puerto Ricans have the right to choose their own path, dem. socialism and independence are things we’d try to build support for even if it started at 0.3%

🇵🇷 “For 128 years of U.S. rule, Puerto Rico has been a colony” Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New York’s 13th District, marked the 128th anniversary of the July 25, 1898 U.S. invasion of Puerto Rico by calling for an end to American colonial rule and declaring her support for the island’s independence. U.S. troops landed at Guánica during the Spanish-American War, and Spain ceded the island under the Treaty of Paris without any input from Puerto Ricans. In 1900 the Foraker Act established that Puerto Rico “belongs to the United States, but is not the United States, nor a part of the United States,” a formula that has defined its status ever since. Congress imposed U.S. citizenship in 1917, months before Puerto Ricans were drafted into World War I, yet residents still cannot vote for president and have no voting representation in Congress. Avila Chevalier pointed to widespread poverty, recurring blackouts, the federal response to Hurricane Maria and the unelected fiscal oversight board known as La Junta, which was imposed by Congress in 2016 to restructure the island’s debt and holds power over its budget above the elected government. “I also support independence for the Puerto Rican people,” she said. “Because after 128 years, it’s the least the people on the island deserve.” 🎥 @DarializaforNY (via Instagram)

Independence and reparations for the Puerto Rican people is a necessary position in the larger fight to dismantle U.S. empire. Same goes for Guam, Hawai’i, American Samoa, and all other lands and peoples occupied by the U.S. colonial project.

Independence is not popular in Puerto Rico. When put to a vote, Puerto Ricans overwhelmingly voted for statehood over independence. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Puer… There is also no widespread independence movement in American Samoa. books.google.com/books?id=nHp7-… Independence is also largely rejected in Hawai‘i. grassrootinstitute.org/2014/06/star-a…

#PorPuertoRico

My Q&A with @AlbertoMedinaPR started with why an "old white British guy" came to write a book about Puerto Rico and ended with the stirring story of how Puerto Ricans humiliated the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1959 at the height of its powers. Check it out here. 👇
