On February 25, 2026, Brazil's Federal Senate Human Rights and Participatory Legislation Committee addressed a complaint concerning the religious persecution of the Bahá’í community in Iran, including reports of arbitrary arrests, detention, and forced confessions.
During the committee proceedings, Senator Damares Alves, President of the Committee, expressed solidarity with the Bahá’í community and acknowledged the longstanding pattern of human rights violations it has faced. The committee confirmed that Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) had been formally notified of the complaint for review and appropriate action.
We thank Senator Damares Alves for her attention to the situation of Iran's Bahá’ís and for helping bring their experiences before Brazil's national institutions.

The United Nations Secretary-General, @antonioguterres, highlighted concerns raised by the Bahá’í International Community regarding religious persecution and discrimination affecting Bahá’ís in Egypt, Iran, Qatar, and Yemen.
The report documents restrictions on civil and burial rights in Egypt, intensified repression in Iran, discrimination in Qatar, and judicial persecution and incitement to hatred in Yemen.
We thank António Guterres for bringing attention to the persecution and discrimination faced by Bahá’í communities and for highlighting the importance of protecting religious freedom and minority rights worldwide.

I urge you all to watch this @UN report on the crimes against humanity happening inside Iran. The content is deeply serious. The recommendation as to what action to take however is a ludicrous joke.
The horrendous suffering of the people of Iran has been inflicted on them by the regime and the regime alone. To add America and Israel as deliberate and proportionate contributors to this suffering is beyond a false equivalency. It is propaganda.
The people of Iran never asked for war. They asked for the machinery of repression, used to massacre them whenever they rose up to protest in their millions, to be neutralised.
The closing words here - said as if they’ve never been said before - that “hostilities must end through diplomacy and human rights at the heart of any agreement” are as meaningless as they are maddening.
“Diplomacy” hasn’t worked with this regime for 47 years. Their behaviour has not altered, despite sanctions, even marginally. After all that has been reported, expecting this regime to change is plain idiocy.
Millions will see this speech as the UN intending to stand in the way of democracy ever taking place in Iran.
When the people rise up again - which we hear is imminent - it looks like the United Nations will regrettably side with the regime again. As they always have.
What chance do the people of Iran have when global institutions designed to protect oppressed populations are failing them so miserably?

Thank you to the Permanent Missions of the United Kingdom (@UKUN_NewYork), Italy (@ItalyUN_NY), Ireland (@irishmissionun), and Canada (@CanadaUN) to the United Nations for drawing attention to the escalating persecution of #Bahais in #Iran.
These Member States raised the situation of the Bahá’ís in Iran during the UN General Assembly Third Committee’s 32nd Plenary Meeting, in the dialogue with Mai Sato (@drmaisato), the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran, and Viviana Krsticevica (@ViviKrsticevi), a member of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran to whom we extend our gratitude for their continued attention to minorities, and in particular the Bahá'ís, and for the work they and their mandates carry out to document and bring to light the human rights situation in Iran.
For nearly five decades, the Iranian authorities have systematically persecuted Bahá’ís, repeatedly scapegoating them in times of national crisis. Today, amid this year’s turmoil in Iran, this longstanding pattern is intensifying, with mounting arrests and imprisonment, torture and forced confessions, violent raids on homes, confiscation of properties and livelihoods, and continued denial of education and burial rights.
At a time when all Iranians face profound hardship and uncertainty, the authorities are directing further resources towards the persecution of a community that has sought only to live in peace and contribute to the well-being of its country.

In February 2026, @SBSNews reported on growing concerns surrounding the treatment of Iran’s Bahá’í community following the January protests, drawing attention to allegations against Bahá’ís, reported arrests, and a broader pattern of persecution.
The report highlighted a statement by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence claiming to have identified a network of 32 Bahá’ís allegedly involved in the unrest, with 12 reportedly arrested. It also referenced findings released by the Bahá’í International Community and Human Rights Watch in December 2025, documenting more than 750 incidents of persecution between June and November 2025, three times the number recorded during the corresponding period in 2024.
Revisiting this report eight months after its publication provides an opportunity to reflect on the concerns raised at the time and the importance of documenting the experiences of religious minorities. Featuring an interview with Vesagh Sanai, a representative of the Bahá’í International Community in Australia, the SBS Persian segment offers insight into the challenges facing Iran’s Bahá’ís and the broader questions of religious freedom, human rights, and international accountability.

Security Agents Raid Milad Aghdasi and Samiyeh Gholinejad’s Home in Yazd
At approximately 11:00 p.m. on 19 October 2026, security agents forcibly raided the home of Mr. Milad Aghdasi and Mrs. Samiyeh Gholinejad, a Bahá’í couple residing in Yazd.
The agents searched all areas of the residence as well as the couple’s personal belongings. The search continued until around 3:00 a.m.
During the raid, the agents confiscated a number of the couple’s personal items.
No information was available about the reason for the operation or the security body responsible for carrying it out.
Mrs. Gholinejad, 32, who lived in Qaemshahr before her marriage, had previously been arrested there by security agents in September 2022, along with several other young Bahá’ís. She was released some time later after posting bail. In connection with that case, she was sentenced to two years and one month’s imprisonment; however, Branch 9 of the Mazandaran Province Court of Appeal later commuted her sentence to a fine of 50 million tomans.
Mr. Aghdasi and Mrs. Gholinejad had also previously been targeted by security agents, who raided their post-wedding gathering at the home of Mr. Mahmoud Aghdasi in Yazd and disrupted the event.
Mr. Aghdasi was also summoned to the Ministry of Intelligence in May 2023. He was released after being interrogated and threatened.

The persecution of Bahá’ís in Iran has drawn expressions of solidarity from voices across Iranian society.
In a video shared on Instagram, Iranian journalist and women's rights advocate @AlinejadMasih reads an excerpt from a letter by Mahvash Sabet, a Bahá’í poet who has endured years of imprisonment because of her religious beliefs.
Addressed to the people of Iran, Sabet’s letter calls attention to the denial of fundamental rights faced by Bahá’ís, including access to education, employment, and the freedom to live according to their beliefs.

Switzerland raises concerns over the situation of Bahá’ís in Iran.
In response to a parliamentary question submitted by Swiss Member of Parliament Rudi Berli, the Swiss Federal Council reaffirmed that the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) is monitoring the situation of the Bahá’í religious minority in Iran.
The parliamentary question highlighted reports of raids and confiscations of property belonging to Bahá’í families, including vehicles, work equipment, and children's toys.
In its response, the Swiss Federal Council stated that the FDFA regularly calls on Iranian authorities, through bilateral and multilateral channels, to respect human rights and protect all minorities.
The statement comes amid continuing concerns over the persecution of Bahá’ís in Iran, including violations of their religious freedom and property rights.
