I'm a varsity head coach. I still coach. And I got tired of my best plays dying on napkins, whiteboards and my camera roll. So I built the thing I wanted on my own bench. Here's what it does.

From the Playbook: UConn Double Staggered. From horns, 2 goes across the floor while 3 cuts to the rim, then 3 comes back out through the stagger for a catch. Hunt the layup first and the clean perimeter catch second. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

The stretch right before your first official practice is its own kind of holiday. You have rewritten the practice plan three times. You already know the first drill, the first thing you will say, the tone you want to set before they lace up. You will not sleep much the night before. You have been waiting on this since March. Coaches, what are you setting the tone with on day one? #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach #CoachLife

From the Playbook: Box Zipper Flare. From a box, 3 zippers up the lane and uses 5's flare screen for the first three-point look. If it is covered, 2 pops to the corner off 4's screen. Last read: a 5-3 ball screen to attack the lane. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

Your opener is a few weeks out. Here is the moment this is built for. The other team rips off an 8 to 0 run and the gym flips. You call time. Everybody wants you to say something loud. The numbers are already in front of you. Who went cold, who is turning it over, what they just started doing to you. You fix the actual problem instead of the loudest one. Counted, not guessed. From the Playbook: Baseline Flash and Pop, vs a 2-3 zone. 4 inbounds to 5, who reverses to 1 as 2 screens the middle defender for 4 to flash. If the flash is covered, 5 screens the outside defender and 2 pops to the corner. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

Snap a photo of a play. A napkin, the whiteboard after practice, a screenshot you saved off X. It reads the play. You tune it. Now it lives in one playbook, and every coach on your staff runs the same set with the same terms.

Transition defense tip that fixes most early-season leaks. Sprint to the paint, not to your man. Get below the ball, protect the rim first, then match up on the way out. Kids who run straight at their man give up the layup behind them every time. Rim, then ball, then man. In that order. How do you teach your kids to get back? #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

Preseason means two gyms at once. You are running varsity while your JV staff runs their own practice down the hall. You cannot be in both. But your system can. When every coach has the whole playbook on their phone, same sets, same terms, same reads, both gyms are teaching your program at the same time. Not two versions of it. Put the system where your whole staff can reach it. START FREE · ballcoach.ai #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach #Playbook

From the Playbook: Hubie Brown, 1 Second Left. Sideline out of bounds. 3 cuts to the corner off a stacked double screen while 4 curls back. Decoys. The read is 2's back screen on 5: lob it high off the glass. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

From the Playbook: Box Back Screen Slot Curl. From a box, 1 uses the right-elbow ball screen while 3 back screens for 5 and sends him at the rim. Then a curl to the right slot. 1 reads the cutter first, the roll or pop next. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

Hot take: culture is just the list of things you are willing to bench a starter over. Everybody says they have standards in October. You find out if you mean it the first time your best player breaks one in a close game. If the rule only applies to the last guy on the bench, it was never a rule. It was a suggestion. What is on your non-negotiable list? #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach #HoopCoach

I drew this set up by hand at my kitchen table. A few Xs, a couple of arrows, my handwriting. One photo in Ball Coach AI and it is a clean diagram my whole staff can pull up and teach from. The stuff you scribble at night does not have to stay a scribble. START FREE · ballcoach.ai #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach #XsAndOs

From the Playbook: 3 Deep. Full-court baseline inbound for a defense that drops a safety deep. 2 sprints deep to drag him over. If he shades to 2, go over the top to 3. If he stays home, hit 1 coming back. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

From the Playbook: 42 Lob. Clear the weak side while 4 back screens for 3. The ball handler shifts the defense left, then throws it over the top as 3 turns the corner to the rim. Built in Ball Coach AI · ballcoach.ai #XsAndOs #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach

Preseason debate, and I mean it. First week of official practice, you get to install one side of the ball first. Offense or defense? Install offense first and you get spacing and pace early. Install defense first and you set the identity everything else lives under. I go defense first. You cannot steal a possession you never guarded. Which side do you build on? #CoachTwitter #BasketballCoach #HoopCoach

You know you are a head coach when your key ring weighs more than your phone. Gym. Locker room. Equipment room. Concession stand. The bus. The one nobody remembers what it opens, but you are scared to take it off. How many keys are you carrying right now? #CoachTwitter #CoachLife #BasketballCoach
