In exquisite timing, local river guardians discovered two significant sewage discharges on the Roding today. The quantity & volume was so big that they were visibly polluting the river (& likely poisoning aquatic life) for hundreds of metres downstream.
Even worse, this stretch of the River at Wanstead Park is one of the most popular natural swimming & paddling spots in East London that will be very busy during the heatwave this week. This deluge of sewage is putting people’s lives (particularly paddling children) at risk. Perhaps @thameswater could use some of the million pound bonus they gave out to stop the sewage & warn local people instead?
Replying to @thameswater
@thameswater recently told me that due to “fiscal constraints”, they can’t afford to fix all of the illegal outfalls on the River Roding by 2030 (already a more than fair deadline in the circumstances I feel).
This single one million pound payment to their finance chief would, alone, be enough to stop a billion litres of raw sewage a year entering the river in Ilford. Which other companies do we allow to commit serious crimes because they’ve taken money that should have been used to ensure their company complies with the law & given it to their execs instead? How long until the government says “no more” to these chancers & puts Thames Water out of its misery?

It’s the usual smoke & mirrors from the Environment Agency on this.
The EA manipulates the data to make the current disastrous state of our rivers look better than it is by carefully choosing sampling points. I was surprised (given my knowledge of the river) to find out from the EA that the River Roding was ok & improving on most metrics. Then I found out that they have only *one* sampling point on the whole lower river & it’s conveniently located just above where the largest amount of sewage enters the river (see picture below) & where the river is most physically modified. How can we actually restore our rivers, rather than just pretending they are fine, without having a genuine picture of the health of the river?
Even worse, tributaries like the Aldersbrook aren’t even monitored at all, despite them being important enough to warrant a permit regime with threat of jail if you touch the river without consent. I wonder if there should be a new ‘Water Framework Directive’ classification of ‘Ecologically Dead; no plans to resurrect it’ for rivers like the Aldersbrook?
The latest Water Environment (WFD) Classification results show us where water bodies are improving and where further action is needed.
This data will help us direct investment and enforcement where it’s needed most to improve our waterways.

There wasn’t a single grassroots river guardianship group at those ‘round tables’ was there? It was the same organisations, big river charities & government agencies who have failed to protect our waterways over the past three decades telling the Mayor it’ll be different this time, if you just give them more cash.
London’s waterways cannot be restored without the involvement of river guardians who actually know their rivers. To show why, please can you (as the government’s water regulator) tell us where all the illegal sewage outfalls on the River Roding (London’s third biggest river) are?

Let me take you back 121 years to Christmas Eve 1905. I have cleaned-up this really incredible early Autochrome, taken by one of my very favourite early colour photographers, Julien Gérardin. It is simply entitled "Coucher de soleil sur la rivière, 24.12.1905" - "Sunset on the River, 24th December 1905".
This was taken two years before the Lumiere brothers marketed their Autochrome colour system to the general public and is a phenomenal experiment in early colour photography. I think it is absolutely stunning.
It was taken using an early glass-plate colour process and isn't colourised. 😍

I guess I could go for a nice dip in the Aldersbrook, wallowing through the mud, sewage & rubbish like a possessed hippo, & then wipe myself clean with the knotweed afterwards.
BTW EA, I still haven’t heard from you about when you’re planning to clean up this up, given I’m apparently forbidden from doing so?

On National Fishing Remembrance Day we honour all who lost their lives in the UK fishing industry.
Today is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of improving safety standards and working practices in the industry - a campaign which Hull played a pivotal role in.

"China is mounting a silent, hostile takeover of Britain
There is no such thing as a private sector under Beijing’s rule. CKI must not acquire Thames Water."
And the reason we would want to hand over control of a monopoly supplying drinking water to 15 million people to the Chinese government is?

Paddling the Severn with @HelenMorganMP, I was strictly told not to fall in. After what water companies have been dumping here, I didn't need convincing!
Ofwat is failing badly. We need a tough new Clean Water Authority that actually holds the water companies to account.

Now @uklabour is introducing a standalone offence of assaulting a shopworker and ending the effective immunity from prosecution for stealing goods worth less than £200.
