I can't believe the US is criticizing Australia's efforts to allow social media users to turn off algorithms. It's utter corrupt pandering o big tech. The Australian initiative has nothing to do with censorship. It's merely giving people control over their own accounts. But it would go a long way to healing polarization. #algorithms

North Korean workers have been forced to do this around Europe for years, basically stripped of the wages, locked in their factories. I found some in the Czech republic some years back.... globalrightscompliance.org/n…

Tibet. Chinese-style. Good story by @JChengWSJ. I had the same impression in Lhasa. The souvenir shops mostly run by Chinese for Chinese, didn't speak a word of Tibetan. Even the most common Buddhist symbol. wsj.com/world/in-china-battl…

These stories about the #USSLIncoln reminds me of #NorthKorea. The late Kim Jong Il was the biggest foodie in Asia. He flew in sushi from Tokyo, cheese from France, caviar from Iran. His soldiers were starving. An interview I did with The New Yorker. newyorker.com/news/news-desk…
Good piece here about the Dalai Lama. When I interviewed him, he had a funny line. "If the Chinese believe in reincarnation, they should reincarnate Mao."

Deep admiration for @BarbaraDemick and the Chinese novelist Fang Fang, winners of the @AsiaSociety @chinabksreview Baifang Schell Book Prize. A great event tonight in NY. Fang Fang, whose books are banned in the PRC, was not able to leave China to accept her award.
