Some people worry that coding with chatgpt is cheating and inhibits your learning. Not in my experience. Sitting next to my 13-year old son now, he is building a game in unity and having a blast - "I've never had so much fun coding!!!" GPT is accelerating his learning by a ton.

Calling developers a “team” when they: - Are independently measured. - Must create tickets to help each other. - Feel like asking for help is failure. - Need PRs approved by specific people. - Pull rank when decisions are made. …is delusional. #mobprogramming

*There’s no such thing as best, one million of you could pass and be the best. Best is nonsense made up to make us collaborate less.

Extreme Programming had a story for reducing irreversibility inside a Whole Team, but never a story for reducing dependencies between teams. I think this failure to scale limited XP’s impact so far.

The mindset there are roles is often what sets teams back. There are no roles. There are skills. Design skills. PM skills. Anyone can have skills. There are responsibilities. A team can decide who will do what in the moment. Focus on skills and responsibilities. Not roles.

The first principle of psychological safety: The harder you make it to voice problems, the harder it becomes to solve them. The issues people are most afraid to raise are the most likely to become thorns in your side. It’s impossible to fix what you don't know is broken.

How did we upgrade our old, 3 Petabyte #Elasticsearch cluster... without downtime? We've got a series of blog posts which explain how we did this. Our first post explains how our old cluster was set up and why we wanted to upgrade. underthehood.meltwater.com/b…

In toxic cultures, time off is a reward earned by working to exhaustion. Burnout is proof of commitment, and vacations are required to recover. In healthy cultures, time off is a right granted to everyone. Well-being is a top priority, and vacations are encouraged to rejuvenate.

As a manager, you lean on your own unique blend of strengths and charisma -- whatever it is that makes people look up to you. As a director, you have to help your managers figure out how to wield influence using *their* unique strengths. What works for you won't work for them.

Lessons from my 1st week at my new job: The things I was previously rejected for "not having enough experience" in, are things I'm actually 100% capable of doing when given the opportunity and support to do it. Keywords here: opportunity and support. Hire Junior talent.

My instinct is to say, pound sand. ☺️ Pay brackets aren't just a matter of supply and demand, they are also a statement of values. If you say that the IC & manager tracks are of equal value and prestige, if people regularly swing between the two, equal comp seems mandatory.

Honeycomb on call teams have an SLO of not getting paged more than twice a week, or having to work an incident outside of business hours more than once every six months. We were burning out our people, so we had to call a halt to the flurry of changes.

The best software engineer I've ever worked with wasn't the best coder on the team. But they were exceptional at: 🔹 Unambiguous communication 🔹 Simplifying; reducing complexity 🔹 Making the right tradeoffs 🔹 Building consensus

Why is "I have to go to another meeting" a socially accepted reason to leave a meeting, but "I have to go to do some work" is not?
