#Sportingparents......STOP packing your kids sports bags. STOP emptying their sports bags and washing their wet, dirty training gear. STOP cleaning their boots. STOP hanging up their wet towels. STOP packing their competition day bags, making their snacks and filling their water bottles. Just STOP!
I know why you do it - you love your kids - I get it - I've got four kids myself.
But - STOP doing stuff for them.
As #coaches we need them to be independent, self-responsible and to accept accountability for what they do and don't do.
That's what they really need from you - to help them to become INDEPENDENT.

Excellence begins with a firm commitment to show up.
Every high performance squad I have ever been a part of had an attendance *requirement* If you fell short of this requirement, you simply could no longer be a part of the squad. Period.
No excuses. No exceptions. A basic expectation that committing to get better begins with committing to show up.
Sometimes athletes show up tired. At that point, the coach amends the plan and, maybe, if the athlete is too tired, sends them home early. But, even if tired...
The athlete shows up.
This is the ground floor, the most basic expectation, that any further improvement is built on.

"What can we do to prevent this?"
Long, over-distance, low lactate, swimming.
Everybody loves short reps. Coaches find it easier to keep the lanes at the same spot in the program, swimmers find the long, easy, swimming boring. Either way, the long easy swims are the bread and butter. Tempo/Threshold work is some super-sweet jam on top. Good in small doses but not the main staple. Champions are built on the long, easy swimming.
Individualized Prescription
If you give a big group of kids 50 x 50 on 50, the front swimer in the lane will be rolling 35's thoughout, the last swimmer in the lane will roll 35's for the first 10 trying to keep up, then 37's, then 40's, then will be crawling in on 45's by the end of the set. This is very poor coaching. It should look like "50 x 50 on 50 - Bob, Jim, Jill hold 35's, Carrie, Frank, Roberto hold 37's, Marjorie, Sally, Christine, you're on 40's." The coach needs to know his/her swimmers to this degree.
Athlete Monitoring
The 35 guy at the front of the lane isn't always a 35 guy. After a rough week of school exams, maybe he's a 40 guy or a 45 guy! Coaches need to monitor in some way & adjust the daily targets accordingly. Obviously, I'm a fan of HRV here, but it could be anything - a simple 1-10 rating of how the swimmer feels today is better than nothing.
This level of programming is exceedingly rare. Generally present in only the highest of high-performance programs. For the sake of the swimmer's health, it needs to become the standard.
A cautionary tale of overtraining in a young female swimmer... ⚠️
Going by some of the comments to my previous post, I'm not sure I expressed just how serious "full blown" overtraining can be.
I think it's important, so I'll share this personal experience....
My first exposure to overtraining came in the form of a fellow swimmer that I raced with. She was the top young swimmer in the region and among the top for her age-group in Australia. She won everything that she entered at the local meets and was on her way to the National team.
At ~14 or 15 years of age, her performances started to drop. She was losing to girls that she was ordinarily body lengths ahead of.
At the meets she looked different. She went from a vibrant, energetic person to someone who was glassy-eyed and not happy to be there. Eventually, I stopped seeing her at the meets.
After a while, I heard from her parents that she had been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She got to the point where she couldn't train anymore. She got to the point where she was having a hard time getting out of bed!
Her grades at school started falling and her parents had to take her out and home school her. In short, training too hard had massive negative effects on her health and her overall life!
This tale is more common than most might expect. Frankly, many age-group coaches are not properly qualified to know proper 'dosing' of training for young athletes & more often than not, adopt a "harder is better" approach.
We need to do a better job of training our coaches and we need to do a better job of communicating the significant risks to athletes, parents and coaches that come with getting it wrong.
