Trump describes Somaliland as a different country. Days later, China and Djibouti oppose our recognition and our relations with Taiwan.
Beijing’s position is familiar. But Djibouti, why is Somaliland’s choice of partners your concern?
You host competing world powers to serve your interests. We choose our partners to serve ours.
Somaliland’s future is for Somalilanders to decide.

Saudi Arabia’s Dilemma
Saudi Arabia wants a united Yemen. The STC wants an independent south. But the Houthi threat gives them a reason to work together.
Southern forces matter to Riyadh’s efforts to push back the Houthis. Many of those fighters also want a separate political future.
They may agree on who they are fighting. That does not mean they agree on what comes next.
Riyadh does not have to accept southern independence to work with them. But the more it relies on them, the harder it becomes to leave their political aspirations unanswered.
How far is Saudi Arabia prepared to move on Yemen’s unity to protect its own security?

Mogadishu got the words it wanted from the OIC. Still no answer to the words it didn’t want from Trump.
“Totally different country” is a difficult line to bury under another communiqué.

HSM credits UAE support for Somalia, then blames it for not delivering reunification.
Somaliland restored its independence in 1991. Major UAE investment came 25 years later.
Why is Abu Dhabi responsible for reversing that decision?
Our decision. Not theirs.
Our partnership with the UAE rests on mutual respect and shared interests.

Addis keeps waiting. Mogadishu keeps choosing sides.
“Wait and see” carries risks too.
Time for Addis to bite the bullet and recognise Somaliland in its own national interest.

Hassan Sheikh says Somalia is moving forward. Meanwhile, Hawadle elders reportedly reached a deal with Al-Shabaab in Maxaas.
If some who fought Al-Shabaab are now negotiating with it, you have more than an image problem.
Protect communities in Somalia. Somaliland is a separate country.

Two weeks ago, Eritrea’s FM accused the UAE of “port imperialism”, questioned Israel’s interest in Somaliland and took aim at Ethiopia’s Red Sea ambitions.
Days later, he was in Washington talking Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Then came the El Alamein statement.
Assab has the geography.
But with Eritrea and Ethiopia at loggerheads, Berbera has something Assab currently doesn’t:
A corridor to Addis.

Maybe being the nice guy in a troubled neighbourhood should finally count for something.
We’ve been here all along.

“When things are going wrong, you need them.”
A year ago, Captain Smit Machchhar said this about cabin crew.
A year later, those words carry a different weight.
Grateful the passengers and crew are safe. The courage, calm and humanity shown in those extraordinary moments say it all.
Wishing Captain Smit a full and speedy recovery. 🙏🏽

Great evening in East London with Sir Mo Farah and the URUN community, celebrating URUN’s 1st anniversary. Sport, friendship and good company.

Erdoğan called Israel’s recognition of Somaliland “illegitimate and unacceptable”, invoking Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Today, he called on the world to recognise Northern Cyprus.
He should start with his buddy HSM. 😂

India has interests in Somaliland in its own right.
Berbera. Bab el-Mandeb. Ethiopia. Trade. Maritime security.
In August, India said it was following Pakistan–Somalia defence cooperation “closely.”
Yesterday, Pakistan’s Air Defence Commander, Air Marshal Muhammad Sarfraz, arrived in Mogadishu for further talks.

Assab has geography.
Berbera has geography + infrastructure.
Berbera is already built:
4.1 km airport runway.
Modernised container port.
1,050m total quay.
Up to 17m draft.
500,000 TEU annual container capacity.

Days later, “Thank You Türkiye” rallies all over Turkish state media.
The PR machine works fast.

2013 Assumptions. 2026 Realities.
In 2013, Washington made its choice: recognise Somalia’s new Federal Government, strengthen the state and back the fight against Al Shabaab.
Today, Al Shabaab remains a major threat, Somalia still relies heavily on international security support, fundamental political divisions remain unresolved, and U.S. forces are still carrying out strikes against Al Shabaab.
Somaliland’s strategic value was there then. It is there today.
President Trump now has an opportunity to look again at the assumptions of 2013 against the realities of 2026 and ask one simple question:
What best serves U.S. interests today?

The Hudson conversation captured something important.
The Horn is changing. Red Sea security, the Houthis, Iran, China and Russia are reshaping the region.
And Somaliland is now part of that conversation as a stable, pro-Western strategic partner.
A very different conversation from a few years ago.

Washington already talks to Somaliland. AFRICOM already goes to Berbera. Recognition is already being debated in Congress.
So does the old “One Somalia” policy still serve America’s interests?
Trump now has the opportunity to make US policy reflect the reality already on the ground.
